the excitement of boys, finding that perfect dress, socialization with peers, being asked to dance by that special boy, having her feet hurt from those heels, anticipation, bonding time with you getting her hair just right.... so many things!!!

If you have some valid reason for doing this and you can explain it to your daughter in a way she can understand, then there may be no negative effect. However, if you just tell her she can't go and don't articulate a reason, she will probably feel some resentment toward you. If she is in junior high school, don't be afraid to chaperone the dance. You can be there to keep an eye on her...but try to let her have a little space too. I'm certain the school would love to have you help out. If she is in high school, you can still chaperone, but it might wind up being more awkward for her and for you.

You didn't say how old your daughter is, but most schools don't sponser these kinds of events too soon. Why are you reluctant? I have three daughters and enjoyed the process. Do you think she is too young now, or do you think this is something she should never attend? I've known of parents who so strictly tried to restrict their childrens activities, that when the kid finally did get out, they really cut loose. How does becoming a grandparent when she's only 16 sound? First time she left the house without her parents. Never had any experience hanging with friends and wanted to experience it all while she could.

The effect of not letting her participate in school dances is twofold. First, you won't have to worry about her getting into any trouble at those particular functions. Second, she'll resent you for yet another reason.

She doesn't participate. Plain and simple.
There are things more important than a little school dance, but the prom is something that one must go to unless she doesn't feel like it at the time.

Other than hating you for being so uptight? Lack of social skills is the biggest problem, then there is the relentless teasing from the other girls. As long as she is in a supervised place, what is the problem with you that you do not want to allow your daughter to grow?

It depends on how old she is- but she could end up socially challenged like me. My mother never let me go to school dances. I couldn't go out until I was 16 and by then I just didn't know how to fit in. Boy/girl dating should be put off until they're 16, but they do need to learn how to socialize before that.

How old is your daughter? The effect will be resentment on her part if you don't. And she will do what she want's eventually. So, be participative. Set boundries, and create a win-win. Good Luck.

um...she could become a loner, not learn important approaching skills when it comes to guys not to mention inportant dance skills. I think it's important that's a big part in a girls life and she should be able to enjoy it. Plus most schools will allow you to chaprone if you have any worries

the fact for not allowing your daughter participate in dances may change her thoughts. she'll start believing you don't trust her. then when you let her go to the store or somehting like that she'll sneek and go to other places. i was in that stage.

depends on the reason.
I never participated in school dances because my father died when I was very young and my mom didn't have enough money to afford it, she explained it to me very carefully and I didn't have any problem with it.
