Birds fly south for winter in the effort of avoiding the cold weather of winter up North, and also for food. In winter their food source are scarce to find in the cold and in the snow, so they fly down south to find food and to survive.

Depending on the birds, so fly as far down south as Brazil and south Chile... but some only to California, Florida or Mexico...

They fly south to a warmer climate. Different bird species fly a different number of miles. Some fly thousands of miles, others only hundreds and some are non-migratory and don't fly anywhere for the winter.
