When you live on-campus, your meals are usually taken care of. There are no bills to send payment for every month, everything is paid for on one bill. There is usually a student assistant living with you, to help ease you through the transistion from high school to college. Dorms are usually in close proximity to campus, so a car is not needed. Dorms often offer programs to help students academically. Some colleges organize planned outings for those living in doritories.

The downfall of the dorms are the rules. Often colleges do not allow visitors of the opposite sex in the dorms after a certain time at night. Many have banned such useful items as waffleirons, electric grills, microwaves, and mini fridges. Alcohol and smoking ae also banned in most all college dorms. Colleges usually reserve the rights to choose your roommate (usually, they let you do this if possible), relocate you (this usually doesnt happen), search your room, and fine your for breaking any of thier rules. Colleges sometimes will punnish/fine you for allowing others to break the rules in your room, if you are present for the offense.

Its a strange way of life, somewhere between tossing your parrents rules out the window, and living in a monastary. I suggest every student try it for the first year, if for nothing else, the free tutoring, and easy access to help and information.

I loved living on campus. I think it is a good transition between "childhood" and "adulthood"

You pay one fee and everything is covered. Your meals are usually included. So many of the things that make life stressful are taken care of.

Another thing that is nice is that you are surrounded by people who have similar interests to you. Living in a dorm can be fun!

One advantage that I didn't realize until I moved off campus was that you don't have to park. If you are going to a campus where parking is a chore, this is a big deal.

The down side of course is small quarters, (usually) having to have a roommate, crappy food in the dining hall, and R.A.s who live to violate you on their assinane rules.

But, overall, I'm really glad I had the dorm experience and I would recommend it to virtually everybody.

Living on campus gives you easier/more convenient access to your classrooms, professors, campus activities than living off campus might. Of course, this depends on how far 'off campus' you are.

I lived in campus housing my first year of college, but it was at a remote location, so I had to travel a bit to get to my classes. No rolling out of bed late and running to class for me. AND, as a design student, it REALLY sucked because I had to constantly lug my stuff back and forth from home to class.

The relationships you can establish in a dorm environment can also be really great and life-long.

Of course, if you thrive off of having your own space, then having your own place off of campus might be better for you.

you will be living in a diversed community, you can develop friendships with a lot of people especially those who have the same major as you, becoming independent is good, learning about different cultures is educational. however, living on campus is expensive.

When I went the dorms and frats all got cheat sheets for the tests which gave them a pretty strong advantage over those of us who commuted.

the campus police will find you faster when you get drunk and fall out of a window and you might live.
