Safety is the answer to your question. Imagine you are driving, and you try passing an 18 wheeler, suddenly he starts changing lanes in your direction. That's because he can't see you until it's too late! Headlights are one of the best safety devices you have on your car,... USE THEM!

Many new cars come with Daytime Running Lamps (DRL). Most people do not know how to remove the fuse that turns them off and most do not know if it is legal to do so. If I remember correctly, it is still legal to disable DRL.

DRL has several benefits. It makes the care more visible in clear conditions as well as in inclement weather. In many locations lights are mandatory at dusk and in rain, snow, fog, smoke and other conditions and may help you avoid a ticket if they are already turned on or turn on automatically.

BTW, those little lights along the side of a vehicle are not Running Lights. Those small lights are called Side Markers and they illuminate when you turn on your parking lights or main headlamps. Driving with only your parking lights on at dusk or night is illegal and subject to fine in many locations. Actual running lights are on vehicles like three-quarter ton pickups --they are those 5 small amber lights on top of the cab. Anyone who refers to sidemarkers as running lights is perpetuating a dangerous misnomer.

My 2002 Toyota always has the front lights on whenever you start the engine. I believe it's a safety thing. Motorcycles have been doing it earlier. It makes it easier to see the vehicle in poor conditions.

When I was a kid, the only time people would have lights on during the day was if there was heavy fog or for a funeral procession.

Often times those are just running lights. GM had them standard for a few years. Not sure if they still do or not. They are on all the time.
