This is one of the best explanations of that I have seen. It's an explanation people will understand.
A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects.
When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: "I don't believe that God exists."
"Why do you say that?" asked the customer.
"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving a God who would allow all of these things."
The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and un-kept.
The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "You know what? Barbers do not exist."
"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"
"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside."
"Ah, but barbers DO exist! What happens is, people do not come to me."
"Exactly!"- affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

That's cute. But it's hardly an explanation. It's an attempt at a parabole.
I don't think I'd compare God to a barber if I was a religious man. A barber charges for his services. How much does God charge to get into Heaven? There's the outstanding difference between the two (lol).
*** Sherry from P's philosophical indictment of science is fatally flawed. Allow me:
The entire premise is based on one quote from the professor.
"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son? Where is your God now?"
I have yet to meet or hear or read of any scientist that claims they have "empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol" to attest to the absence of "God".
This is not how science works people. There is no point in trying to prove an entity, property, element, etc. NON-EXISTENT. The scientific method is about proving what DOES exist. Once you're able to straighten out the logic chain, you'll see that science is not the denier of "God". It's really the exact opposite. Many of those that believe in "God" deny science. That's okay as long as they don't try and argue their contentions on scientific or logistical terms.

Your story has a flaw. To begin with, I have actual proof of the existence of barbers. I always have my hair cut by one. And he does exist. And I can tell, because I can actually see him, and talk to him, and when I visit him, my hair looks objectively shorter.
But most importantly, barbers exist, what happens is NOT that people don't come to them. It's that people can't afford to pay their job. Or that people don't need or want to have their hair cut.
You see, that's the problem with many believers. They tend to think in terms of twos. If one theory -evolution, atheism, etc.- doesn't work (although they don't really prove it doesn't, but they give facts that haven't been accounted yet by them, which is different), then the other -i.e.: God- must be true.
But as a matter of fact, I could find several other solutions to those things many people put down to God, just as I could find several other explanations to why there are people with long hair around.

Well, I don't exactly believe in THE God, but, if there was/is ever a "God", "he's" probably dying in bed right now. Why? Look at the world's history. Until maybe a thousand years ago everything used to be perfect; no wars, no hate, etc. Look at the world today, it's literally killing it self and out of control. The god is dying! So, I'm not saying there is no god, but even god can't control his own life, even if he is the all might and powerful being living up there.
Do you really want the truth? The ONLY person who can tell you wither if God exists or not is YOU. Look deep down and follow what your heart says. Listen to the little voices, the little signs, etc. No one, no book, no anything can tell you that God is really here, the only person who can do that is YOU!

Does God Exist - Things to Consider
Once you're ready to ask the question, "does God exist?" here are a few observations to consider as you begin your search for an objective answer:
Discoveries in astronomy have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that the universe did, in fact, have a beginning. There was a single moment of creation.
Advances in molecular biology have revealed vast amounts of information encoded in each and every living cell, and molecular biologists have discovered thousands upon thousands of exquisitely designed machines at the molecular level. Information requires intelligence and design requires a designer.
Biochemists and mathematicians have calculated the odds against life arising from non-life naturally via unintelligent processes. The odds are astronomical. In fact, scientists aren't even sure if life could have evolved naturally via unintelligent processes. If life did not arise by chance, how did it arise?
The universe is ordered by natural laws. Where did these laws come from and what purpose do they serve?
Philosophers agree that a transcendent Law Giver is the only plausible explanation for an objective moral standard. So, ask yourself if you believe in right and wrong and then ask yourself why. Who gave you your conscience? Why does it exist?
People of every race, creed, color, and culture, both men and women, young and old, wise and foolish, from the educated to the ignorant, claim to have personally experienced something of the supernatural. So what are we supposed to do with these prodigious accounts of divine healing, prophetic revelation, answered prayer, and other miraculous phenomena? Ignorance and imagination may have played a part to be sure, but is there something more?
If your curiosity has been piqued and you desire to look into this matter further, we recommend that you consider the world's assortment of so-called Holy Books. If God does exist, has He revealed Himself? And if He has revealed Himself, surely He exists...

This is a good story and a good explanation. I also appreciate that you only gave a good explanation. I hate when people try to prove that God exists. Obviously it can't be proven. That's why faith is needed. I think this story also demonstrates how there is no absolute proof that God does not exist. People have tried to prove that there is a God or that there isn't a God for a very long time. However there is no proof, only a deep, personal choice.

It's a fault analogy. You've gotta pay to visit the barber, who is not by definition omnipresence, which God supposed to be. You do not require faith to talk to barber, and need no love for the neighbor the same way you do to connect to God.
I personally think that God exists in people mind, and that is good enough to control the social behavior of human being. In absolute truth, is it important to verify existence of God, I think not. As it is required faith to believe (generally beliefs required faith anyway), so doubting of existence of God write of the faith in God. If you do have faith in God, then this is not a question and the idea of God works in its intended way.
I am an Atheist, in Christian definition, but I believe that existence of God in the people's minds is sufficient enough to control that mass be in good social behavior, unless and until there is a better way to suggest or control the mass. Is concept of God perfect or not is another question. As because the concept of God itself has created conflicts and war for the most part of this millennium. For even today, there still are conflicts every where in the world, particularl in the area of Jews, Christian and Muslim, who all share the same God.

"That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."
Why should we go to god? If god really loved us, god should provide for us without us having to search for him. Why do we have to look for him? How could we look for him? I thought god couldn't be seen? I thought god was everywhere? Even if all those problems were taken care of, the fact remains that millions of people that are starving or in pain everyday "go to god and look for god", yet, they still starve, remain in pain, and die horrible deaths. And even if THAT problem was solved, there's still the problem of EVIL! Why did god create evil in the first place? There is no reason for a good god to create evil and no logical explanation for this problem outside of fairy tales. This story doesn't work at all.
This story has more holes than Swiss cheese! All this story is evidence of (at the very most) is that god doesn't care and is evil.

Wow! I like that analogy. I too believe god exists. I unfortunately have no proof that can be expressed through words without causing doubt. What i do know for sure, is that if I did not believe there was a god I would be a lot more unhappy and I wouldn't have learned the vital lessons along the way that have helped me keep my sanity.

The Harmony that regulates the workings of the universe reveals a plan which, by its very nature, posits the existence of an Intelligent Power. Consequently, it makes no sense to attribute the origin of all things to chance. Chance cannot produce anything like the creations of intelligence. If chance had the properties of intelligence, it wouldn't be chance.
To credit the beginning of all things to the essential properties of matter is to mistake an effect for a cause, since properties are themselves effects. There must be a First Cause.
