Our diet here in the states, is mainly the problem.

We eat a lot of fast food and processed food. Most of us don't have time to cook a home cooked meal because of work and family. I also think we are pretty sedentary in our lives. We don't get enough exercise.

I visited Mexico city and Acapulco this summer and I was surprised to see how few obese people I saw there....I concluded that their diet and active lifestyle kept them from the obesity we suffer from here. They eat whole foods from street markets and they really dont have fast food like we do here in the states. They also walk so much more, few own cars so many have to walk and take buses.

On the beach I didn't see ANY obese people, contrary to what I see here in the states.

Obesity is not one of the major health problems in today's world. It is only a major problem in places like the US. It would be hard to claim that Africa, South America, and Asia have any real trouble with obesity. In fact the problem is just the opposite - not enough food. To figure out why obesity is a problem in the US, we must first realize that only the US has this problem to such an extent. Then we can start to examine our country and our society's flaws that fuel ths major problem.

Many answers. My favorite recreation. Fastfood. Fast food joints in the US sell larger portions of products, specially soda, than any other country. Other reasons are most of the foods you see in the supermarket are highly synthetic food products and not food themselves. The high increase in foreign chemicals, large usage of sugar and the fact that we have become lazy and computer happy are all major factors.

We have more fatty foods in our diets and our portions are much (MUCH) larger than what they were in earlier generations. My grandmother grew up in the depression and makes sure there is no food left over after family meals by saying, "Eat whats on your plate do you know how many children are starving right now?". Since she couldn't eat as much as other children as a child she wants her children (all adults) and grandchildren (all young adults) to eat and eat and eat.

There are psychological and social reasons as well.

Because thousands of years of evolution lead to people who could survive on very little to eat and they had to exercise a lot just to get enough food to eat, firewood to keep warm and a lot of other physical work. Now we have lots of food and very little exercise.
