i think the secret admirer approach would be best and after a note or two and/or some flowers, meet her at some public place then you'll at least know if she's available and receptive and if rejected it's easier to take.

Absolutely. Try to introduce yourself to her from somewhere besides her house. Especially if you are meeting her for the first time, expect rejection. Whereas if you meet her first around other friends it will be less awkward
