This is illegal for sure. Your boss can not mandate any donation nor can your boss pressure you with threats implied or otherwise. Refuse to pay. If your boss threatens you or fires you, go to the labour board and stand up for yourself and your coworkers. Also, try to get your coworkers on board with you. Your boss is a bully and will fold under a united front.

You do not mention where you are located, i.e. what country? In the United States it would not be illegal for an employer to require an employee to give money to someone in prison or to a political party or to a charity or to anyone for that matter. For example: If you worked for me and I required you to give 10 dollars a week to a fund for my child's college education. There is nothing illegal about that. If you refused to give the money I could fire you. I could require you to bring in a chocolate cake with orange icing every day. If you didn't I could fire you. I could require you to wear a pink shirt every day. If you didn't I could fire you. Surprising huh?
You, on the other hand, could tell me to go to h ell. No one could force you to work for me.

Noway,!!!! tTalk to someone who knows the law and than let your boss know someone will be talking to him about this being a bad decision to force others in your office to donate. I have several friends who are lawyers and others who are going to law school..interesting!!! stephanie56chevy@yahoo.com

You can not be forced to make a donation. If your boss is threatening your job, that is called extortion, and that is a felony.

Very carefully, without telling anyone, contact local law enforcement, preferably the folks that busted your co-worker... it sounds like there is more to the story of illegal activities than you or law enforcement know... something much bigger is afoot... Be careful, smart and proceed with all due speed and caution
