12 months or younger is infant, 1-2 years old is a toddler, 3-5 a preschooler, 5 (kindergarten) and up is school-age by childcare standards.
However, if a 3 year old is not potty trained (accidents are ok) then they may be classified as a toddler.

I think age three begins the "preschool" age. So ages 1-2 are the toddler years.

It would seem that at four, possibly five that a child is better at understanding the world around them and can, in some ways, care for themselves. Toddler would end at three or four.

I would say at about 5 or 6, b/c in Kindergarten, I would say they are "very mature" toddlers, and by First Grade, they'd better be a kid b/c this is when they start to get what's considered real homework.

In my mind, toddlerhood extends from about 1 year to 3 years of age. Four is more "prechooler."
