Okay for my science fair when I was in 8th grade. I studied up on rocks and how they help us today. Of course that was ... oh well it was back in the Dino age. But none the less there are a lot of rocks that are pretty important to us as a society.

There are rocks like flint that have been around for thousand of years and rocks that are an important part of eye glasses. There is fools gold that drove minors crazy thinking they had the real thing. Gold, silver, rocks that hold fossils which give us an important look into the pass. Prettified wood is technically no longer wood it is now stone.

So much and I can pretty much assure you that if you do your presentation correctly and hone in on your report you won't come in second. A lot of people will do the sun and earth and its relation to stars. others will want to show how to blow things up. Some will get crazy with chemistry.

There will be a lot of those science projects. But keep the element of surprise on your side. Do your research, prepare your presentation and you will blow everyone away with how rocks help us.

If you know anything about electric current, you could use a small electric motor, and convert it into an electric generator using a small windmill as a source of energy. It's a very interesting project, and it can be a practical and useful item to power an emergency light source during power outages.
