During its ascendency, Christianity thrived and grew because they were able to use the military and political power of their patron, Constantine (and his successors) to suppress all opposition and dissent. This extended to the destruction or takeover of all pagan temples in the Roman Empire, and the burning of all written works that were non-canonical. Basically, all secular knowledge was destroyed... philosophy, mathematics, medicine, engineering. The direct result was the Dark Ages... basically, over 1,000 years of enforced ignorance. If not for Christianity, Christopher Columbus would probably have been going to set up a mining colony in the Asteroid Belt, instead of looking for a shortcut to the Far East.
When the Moors (Moslems) conquered Spain, the brought with them a lot of ancient literature, which they had preserved. Over time, this information was translated into Latin, and filtered throughout Europe. This influx of ancient knowledge and wisdom triggered the Renaissance, and (ultimately) the Age of Reason.
So, in that sense, your Islamic friends are correct... they are directly responsible for awakening the western world from over 1,000 years of ignorance. Unfortunately, they remained stuck with social and religious attitudes that prevailed around the 14th Century... they did not come along for the ride.
Oh, yeah... they invented Algebra, and the concept of 'zero'... that was their direct contribution.
Another interesting note... the level of medical knowledge and ability of the Romans was not achieved again until around the time of World War I.

I wouldnt say that they claim modern science, rather they saved it. Europe went downhill when christianity was forced on the people and made anything by non christians to be evil. So Christians declined in science, philosophy, medicine, ect. While Muslims were reading plato and charting the universe and working on new fields of algebra.
