Douglas I respect anyone who has been to war and would go in a New York second if called to serve.

Well, that depends on the person. I served and used what I learned (including discipline) to start a very nice career on the outside. I served with many fine men and women who are out and successful in their civilian lives now.
But, I have friends who got out and "lost their edge" also. Some of them have went back in. Others are struggling to make it.
I think what you do with your life after the service depends on what kind of person you are and how you were brought up. No matter what the drill instructors tell you, they never really "break" you. If you were a hard working person going in, you will be that much more hard working after. But if you had a bad work ethic and little drive when you joined, chances are you will return to that after.

Hear that? That's us calling. Head on down to your local recruiter & take some pressure off all the folks on stop loss that have already done their part & want a break now. It's time for you & everyone else to step up now.

As far as discipline & lazy vetrans, the two are not necessarily linked. There are lazy people in the military. Anyway, yeah some do & some don't. Discipline isn't something that's simply instilled & exists forever. It's reinforced & maintained by the leaders around you. Also, a lot of folks in the military are motivated by the stakes. They feel they have a chance to change the world by doing their job well & that if they do it poorly the people around them might get killed. It's a little hard to go from there to if you don't go the extra mile the company might not make a couple more bucks that you'll never get credit for. It's not really the military that didn't do a good job by these people. It's more like they did too good a job by them & that a lack of leadership & personnel mgmt in the civilian world just aren't as good.

As a Vet myself, I think I can give you an honest answer. If they were lazy in the service, they will be lazy out of the service. I would say that about 80% of the people that I served with were hard working. The other 20% were worthless. We had a term for them then; ROAD (retired on active duty).

It all depends on the person and type of service... I have served for over 20 years in three different branches of the military and each has left me with something to use to include discipline for other jobs or duties out side of the Military...

I've worked with many veterans. Most retain the discipline they were taught. They wear their hair short, shine their shoes, say yes sir, no sir. I haven't found them to be any lazier than the rest. They respect authority and will do as told rather than gripe like most non veterans do. Most of them are out of shape. They fail to keep up the military physical training.

I can only speak for myself - I have been out of the active Marine Corps for 20 years and I still find myself doing some of the things I was trained to do in the Corps. I guess there is truth in the oud saying once a" Marine allways a Marine". To anwser your question - NO you will never completely LOSE the discipline once you have lived it.

I don't think they lose it. They just don't have to worry about Art.15 or being Court Marshall Then some think because they served they have done their time and others owe them If that makes any sense. How ever most of the ones I know still have the spirit.

some of them just dont take their lessons into the world with them, and even others become slobs just to get back at the service because they are bitter that they had to take orders for so long...but there are lazy people throughtout all professions..I do know lazy vets..and I know some vets that are squared away forever...but the laziest people are in congress by far who vote themselves raises while are vets are forced to go to hospitals and such that are disgusting and a real slap in the face...

People in the military have seen the worst possible hell ever. If you are too chicken **** to ever join the military and/or be in war dont you judge our servicemen.
