a_rivers1968, a Maltese is NOT a designer dog. that is a purebreed dog that is recognized by the AKC (american kennle club) and "designer dog" would be if you breed your maltese to a chihuahua...and then called the pups a "maltchi" which btw they do...and them charge $$$ for it.

im know very well that every dog on this planet was a "mix" and was bred into a purebreed over time. I AM also aware that we no longer breed for the true USE of the dog anymore. example: Dalmations are breed for compainion dogs...they are no longer used as "guard dogs" the ride along under horse drawn carriages anymore.
this said...i find it HIGHLY irresposible to breed without function, first of all, and second i find is immoral to breed while SHETLER DOGS DIE!

designer dog -> "Golden doodle" cross between Golden Retrieiver and Poodle
designer dog -> "BichonShih Tzu" cross between a Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu
designer dog -> "Puggle" cross between a Pug and Poodle
people who 'buy' these dogs are dopes really I mean if they think their dog is quality they are entirely wrong because if either parent was a quality dog it wouldnt be used to breed mixed breed pups - it would be breeding purebreds
I think people buy these dogs because they are uneducated and think these crosses are cool for some reason and dont fully understand the ethics of dog breeding
anyone who buys from a pet store is showing their ignorance and they are willingly supporting cruelty.. if you dont know these are from puppy mills by now I seriously wonder what a person has been doing, because this should be standard knowledge and of course a pet store isnt going to tell you they are puppy mill pups.. infact they will do anything to hide this fact from you...

Loosing your Mind, probably, but try to look at it this way. I can relate, though I am no expert. At least the more novice dog advisers out there are aware of what designer dogs mean (bad ethics, bad genetics, bad outcome, puppy mills...). Try and take solice in knowing that you chose a rare breed for a lot of reasons, and spend your time loving your pup rather than trying to educate the ignorant. By the way, I knew nothing of your breed, saw the name and can see why people could get confused, even though he is not a recent designer dog breed. Your pup is beautiful. If I may make one more suggestion, If it were me and someone came up to me saying the same thing, I would first "agree with them" that I was discusted by all the new designer breeds too, then I would "relate" by going on to tell them how much you love having a rare breed that dates back to the 1600's when the middle states were being settled and dogs were used for Hunting. then I would comment on how everyone thinks he is beautiful and has never heard of the breed. How proud you must be to not need a golden.. (no offense, but they are not my style.. I am a shar pei lover through and through... also very unique dogs)

People buy them because they are uneducated about dogs and don't know what they're getting. They also want the "designer" dogs because they see their favorite celebrity or other famous person with a "designer" dog so they want one too.
It's the same with purebred dogs who don't fit breed standards. As a longtime schnauzer owner I get annoyed when I see ads for "Rare white schnauzers" that cost $200 or more than their salt and pepper, sliver, or black litter mates. If the people interested in these dogs did even 1 hour of research they'd discover that white schnauzers are not breed standard, and that it's actually considered to be a defect.
I believe that many people just want a dog because it may be popular or the "in" thing to do and don't think about the long term repercussions of owing a dog. My mom has 3 rescued schnauzers that all came from homes where the previous owner either didn't have time for the dog or wasn't prepared to deal with the breed.

While I do not agree with "designer" breeds, of putting 2 purebreds together to make money. I do believe in making new breeds. And in order to do that you MUST mix!
The cockapoo for example, a name I do not like for this hybrid by the way.. Is one that many of use are actually working on making a new breed. They have been bred on purpose since the 50's, but especially within the last 10 years people have been more careful about what they are breeding (good quality dogs).
So in order to do this you have to mix breeds. EVERY breed out there at one time was a mix of 2 or more breeds. I always tell people to do a search on their purebreds for "origin" and you will find what breeds they came from.
For example, a Bichon originated from the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle..So they are part spaniel and poodle basically.
And then as you breed on you get more consistancy. Like with the cockapoo..I breed 2nd and 3rd generation, which means, I am breeding cockapoos to cockapoos, not cocker spaniel to poodle..

I had a sweet Maltese for 8 years. Designer dog, yes, but I bought her because we needed a dog that didn't create a lot of dander. I miss her a lot. Designer she might have been, but she was a very good friend.

...... Gotcha now, yeah you are right. Once upon a time ago, no one would pay that much money for a mixed breed. I also think it is stupid to pay thousands of dollars for a "tea cup" breed.

I went into a pet store once and they had this dog that was like 6 different breed and was charging $565.00 for this dog. I turned to the clerk and said "So what you are saying is that this is a high priced mutt?" Well they rudely asked me to leave the store!
I could have maybe, just maybe understood if it was only 2 differet breeds bu not 6. She looked like the dog in the movie "As Good As It Gets".

I get why a person would want a mixed breed dog, I have 3 and I love them all. I think it is so funny that people will pay $$$$ for a mixed breed dog when they can get them for a small donation at an animal shelter.

WHY??
Because people are >
A=stupid
B=ignorant
C= lazy
D=herd mentality
Too stupid to see past the MARKETING GIMICK(LIES!)
Too ignorant of the couple of hundred of REAL BREEDS available-from reputable breeders!
Too lazy go look or do ANY research before they buy from CROOKS!
Unable to resist "Such & such has one" when old such & such is ALSO stupid,ignorant & lazy.
Fortunately,ignorance IS CURABLE. If only folks can get over stupid & lazy.
KEEP ON TELLING IT LIKE IT IS!! Even ONE victory is worth it.
PS: "moonfairy" is FULL OF ...uh,FERTILIZER! & makes MUTTS ON PURPOSE!!

i think its a waste of money but people might have to have pure breed dogs to breed or to show. Then they probably are getting paid in return.
