you'd be surprized. As this planet is being over populated ,mankind must move into space if we're 2 survive.A moon base would be mainly a mining operation 2 mine and catapult material into space where it could be collected and refined for space stations[actually our first stations would be refineries 2 smelt down the ore and produce differant metals]lottsa new jobs and each habitable station built could house 1 million people comfortably.Thats a 1 mile wide by 5 miles long drum shaped station.Day/nite regulated by reflectors or mirrors, gravity controled by rotation

I haven't heard that we were going to build a base there, but if we did, it would be much cheaper, and take much less fuel to launch spacecraft into the solar system from the moon, because of the limited gravitational force as compared to the earth. I think some politician suggested a few years ago that it would be a good place for high security prisons but nothing came of that. Ron

Well, that's to make sure humans can mass-migrate to the moon when the Earth becomes unfit for human survival... At the rate humans are using up natural resources and polluting the world, I'm positve that we'll be living on the moon in maybe a hundred years' time.

The low gravity on the moon would allow the manufacture of some items to be much more easy, and some that can't be made anywhere but in low gravity. These items include technology and medicine. From a military standpoint, it is the high ground.

No equipment is proper yet open and loose marketplace is the merely excellent accessible.

Having a space station is for exploring, not necessarily to start suburbs on the moon. It's like going on a trip. You want to see something new on your trip withour having to go back to your own home every night.
