Usually the best thing to try is fiber. And, the best way to get this is through fruits and vegetables, especially foods that start with B (except for beer and beef), such as bran, bananas, beans, broccoli, etc. Also, combine this with exercise and plenty of fluids (especially prune juice).

If this doesn't work, go for the non-absorbable fibers (a.k.a. bulk-forming agents) like Metamucil (works GREAT), Fiber-con and Citrucel. These are natural fibers, not really medicine, so they can be bought over the counter and actually come in capsule form, powder form, or cookie/wafer. Give them at least a 1-2 weeks of taking them every day before giving up on them. Drink plenty of water with the bulk-forming laxatives. They can sometimes cause bloating/cramping but this usually goes away as your body gets used to it.

If this doesn't work well enough you need to go to your doc and get some stool softeners or other agents like Miralax, Polyethylene Glycol, Docusate sodium, etc.

Try to stay away from the over-the-counter laxatives, which aren't really meant for long-term use.

Of course, the simplest thing to drink is water...water, water!

How much?
Take your weight (let's say, 200lbs.) -- then translate to the same number of ounces (200oz), and divide by half = about 100 ounces.

Cultured foods like MISO (a pleasant tasting soy-sauce type paste mixed w/warm water for broth), yogurt, or acidophilus all help to keep intestinal bacteria happy in your favour. This is very important, especially if you've been on antibiotics or have subjected yourself to the deadening effects of narcotics. Even my elderly dog was helped by these foods.

Also remember to eat simpler, unrefined, whole foods.
A whole lot of processed foods = a whole lot of crap!

Now, another natural/herbal thing you can take to treat constipation is CASCARA SAGRADA (Sacred Bark), a very ancient and trustworthy remedy. Cascara is considered by some experts to be the safest and most effective laxative available, even for children, elderly, and pets.

Studies show that it does not cause dependency or vitamin/mineral depletion like many other laxatives. In fact, it actually supports the digestive tract (for prevention in the long run) by correcting hormonal imbalances controlled by the pituitary and facilitates the activation of the gallbladder, liver and the pancreas, thus improving how the muscles of the colon move things along. Dosages of Cascara for adults are usually prescribed on the container.

I hope you'll find this helps to get things running smoothly again!

Love & Light!

Hi first off its ok to addmitt that it is you with the constipation problems. Nothing to be embarrassed about. I had a major sugery and all the meds made me constipated. The only thing that worked for me was milk of magnesia. ( may have spelled it wrong) The off brand stuff is much cheaper and works just as good. To get your bowels going I would take two doses the first time. You have to take it regualary. Twice a day. I guarantee you this will solve your problem. And the stuff does not taste that bad. I am interested in knowing if you try this and it works. If you do send me a message. I tried ex lax, suppositores, and nothing worked. When in the hosp while doing a chest x ray is when they noticed my body was full of poop and I need to get relief.

I would visit the doctor and keep the cat in a room away from the cat or send the cat to another house for now. I'm allergic to dogs, but I have 2 of them. I get itchy and red and I sneeze a lot when I pet or groom them, but mostly I can deal OK with them. Frankly, if my child had had trouble breathing, I think the cat would have slept outside that night, but you may be able to make it work. Keep your daughter involved in the process. Claritin is approved for children 3 and over. Zyrtec is for younger babies.

Go to the health food store and ask for Super Cleanse by Natures Secret. This is natural and if you follow directions will be great with no discomforts. For a regular problem, I know of people using it on a regular basis, every day.

Dr. Atkins (Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution) reccommends taking extra vitamin C. Lots extra, not a little extra. It's pretty effective. Exercise and plenty of water are important too.
