Fastest thing that flies = Space Shuttle (Not technically an aircraft as it is not air breathing)

Fastest Air Breather: SR-71 Blackbird. I've heard that there are only two aircraft that can keep up with an SR-71: Another SR-71, and an F-111, nothing however can catch an SR-71 but the Russians did build a fighter that was designed to get up close enough to launch a missle at it. I think it was the MiG 25, however I could be wrong. It traveled so fast beyond its actual capabilities though, and could only get to its top speed for one flight before having the engines completely rebuilt.

The SR 71 used as a spy plane achieved in excess of mach 4

The fastest plane in existence is the Space Shuttle. While it's fastest speeds are experienced while re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, (Mach 25 or roughly 8.2 km/sec), it's speed while in orbit is roughly around Mach 23 or roughly 7.6 km/sec. Or in English, around 17,200 MPH.

Since it lands like an airplane, it therefore qualifies to answer this question. :)

officially SR71
unofficially the Aurora the US government denies it's existence but it denied the existence of the SR71 as well for 8 years before it was forced to admit it existed.

[edited to add a comment on the X15 below] The X15 would be the fastest but it is a rocket plane not an air breathing plane so it doesn't count (for most comparisons)

Officially, It is the SR71 Blackbird. Designed in the 1960 by Lockheed Martin as part of the company's Advanced Development Projects, known as the "Skunk Works".

Any Google of SR71, Skunk Works, etc. will gove you all you need to know.

Good Luck!

Space Shuttle,X-15 and SR-71 depending on how you define a plane.

My husband first said SR71...........but after he thought about it and you said any kind, he now says X15. Technically, the space shuttle is considered a plane, but all in all he says the X15.
( I personally have no freaking idea, but my husband knows planes, he can even tell what a plane is just by hearing its engines.)

Well of course one needs to ask the late Douglas Adams, its any aircraft employing the "bad news drive" because nothing travels faster than bad news...
