Don't you see you're not helping anyone by providing an automatic translation? They're wrong TOO many times. They can return nonsensical answers or even worse, change the meaning entirely. So, please, don't provide automatic translations for the two points. They're useless. Don't you agree?

An automatic translator translates "I don't think we can make it" into Spanish as "No creo que podamos hacerlo." which actually means "I don't think we can do it" (meaning: have sex). That's entirely different, and it doesn't give you a hint of what was really said.

Arrg, absolutely.
For a good laugh, take a paragraph, any paragraph, in English and translate it using an automatic translator through 3-4 languages, such as English-German-French-English and see what the end result is. You won't even have to compare it to your original to see how close it is because it will make no sense.
OK, I just did that with the above paragraph on Google's translator, and it gave me the following:

You should not compare it even with your presentation, to see, as it is narrowly, because it of it is logical none.
If it were reliable, it'd at least make sense and mean about the same as the original even if it used a few different words. Clearly, this is not the case. It of it is logical none, indeed.

I agree with you. I cannot stand them. What gets on my nerves is when the asker rewards the 10 points to someone who gave them an incorrect translator response, because they don't know that the response is wrong. In the meantime they have a couple of good answers that are ignored. At the same time, I can't help but wonder about the reaction of the people that they try these incorrect translations on. Some of the translations that I have seen on here from English to French are hilarious, so it must be quite funny sometimes.
I am sure that people on here will continue to use them though, because they want 2 points whether their answer is right or not. I personally prefer that my answer be correct and useful than to have 2 points.

I think that online translators have some good applications, but people try to use them in the wrong situations.
If I needed to look at a website in another language, I think that an online translator would give me enough of a clue about the content of the website that I could figure it out. In other words, I think they're pretty good if I'm trying to understand another language.
Many people on Y!A use them to try to produce, which is where they run into trouble. So, as long as they're being used for understanding and not production, I think they're fine.

I agree with you. Online translators don't give accurate translations. I am french, and sometimes when someone asks a translation to french, some people propose translations from automatic translators. I need to tell the asker to trust my translation instead of automatic translators, because I am french. The automatic translators are useless and most of the time the translations don't make any sense at all. Softwares are unable to translate a language, they don't have a human brain.

Because I'm not going to spend time learning a language because I might possibly be able to use it on here.
Online translators are quick and easy and as long as you're not translating anything for anything other than personal use, you should use them.

Because they can give us a hint as to what is being said. Our brains only use a small piece of our language to determine what is being said.

They are not completly useless, but they are very limited!
I use them to help supplument my reading of Chinese, but I always take it with a grain of salt. . .
