Well planets have an important role. Jupiter and other large planets have kept the inner solar system clear of debris, allowing life on Earth to develop with much more ease. As for exosolar planets, it seems that one of the properties of the universe and the way solar systems form creates planets around stars often. So because there are planets here, there are planets there. Modern science developed around studying and explaining the movement of planets (why does that dot move differently than that dot?) and so we have planets to thank for much of the advances we have today. Indeed then it seems, that the planets can remind us that God loves us, so look at them in the way you want to. They are indeed wonderful to behold in telescopes!

To give our scientists means by which to understand the laws of science and nature, and the stepping stones to try to comprehend the vastness of the cosmos.
For instance, where would we be if Galieleo hadn't studied the planets and come to the conclusion that Earth and the other planets revolved around the sun, and not vice versa? (Well, he'd have lived a whole lot longer, but you know what I mean.) Without the other planets, he'd have never made this observation.

Also, if God intends for humans to someday travel to other worlds, he's given us a map... a way to look at a solar system from afar and guess which planets may be the best to land on.

When God created the universe and everything in it, he expressed great satisfaction at all he created.

Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.

So at least part of the answer is that God likes to exercise his great creativity. The fact that every planet is totally unique in size, location and the vast array of physical features is testimony to God's love for uniqueness.

In addition, Jupiter and possibly the other massive planets protect the earth from the vast majority of wayward asteroids that come from the Ort Cloud. Nearly all of these asteroids are accelerated by Jupiter into high orbits beyond Earth.

Just imagine the wisdom behind creations. Or at least think about your own self. Will such a great wisdom create something without purpose or aim? Just think on the following situation:

Children of nearby houses are playing in a ground. The chat many things. About the parents, sun, moon, cars, aeroplanes, rockets, missiles and so on. What they talk is from their limited knowledge.

Just imagine that there is a greater wisdom behind us when we see all creations.

55. Are all the globes that revolve in space inhabited?

"Yes, and the people of the earth are far from being, as you suppose, the first intelligence, goodness, and general development. There are many men having a high opinion of themselves who even imagine that your little globe alone, of all the countless myriads of globes around you, has the privilege of being inhabited by reasoning beings. They fancy that God has created the universe only for them. Incessant vanity!"

No g-d created other planets, no need for g-d to explain their existence.
They were for oceans of time before we were ever here to see things, and many years before we were able to explain things correctly.
