Traditionally the man should spend one month's salary on a ring. But I would say you should pick a ring you like! It doesn't need to be expensive to be beautiful.

I think it's silly when people have to go into debt for a piece of jewelry. My husband spent $1,100 on mine, and I would have been happy even if he spent $500. Don't get me wrong, my ring is beautiful, it's 1 carat, and I would never trade up no matter how rich we become. I think the whole wedding and engagement thing has become too materialistic. It shouldn't cost $15,000 to show your love to someone. You should spend what you can afford.

The average is $3,000 to $4,000, but it runs by age a young couple will spend less where a couple in 30s will spend on an average of $15,000. Established in their careers & more income.
My daughter's friend just got engaged & got a 2-1/2 carat diamond solitaire set in platinum. Her fiancee paid $11,000 - it is beautiful. He took her to Barbados to propose. Fininancial planners obviously make good money.

What you feel you can afford. If a woman wants a piece of jewelry that costs more than a car and you don't live in the Taj Mahal that's a warning sign. You can definitely get a classy, tasteful diamond solitaire for under $1,000. But if you have more money than God, get the Hope Diamond mounted.

Spend what you're comfortable spending on it. Jewelers will say 2-3 months salary, but consider who's telling you that, ok? I wouldn't go seriously into debt for a ring either, and any woman that would expect you to isn't worth marrying.

Financial experts recommend that couples spend not more than three weeks' salary, or roughly 6 percent of annual income. On the other hand, many jewelry experts recommend that you invest considerably more. Couples with limited finances at the time of their engagement can certainly reset the stone or add extra stones at a later date.

You should typically spend the equivalent of three months salary. If you're low on cash and don't want to finance or lay-away, try ebay or pawnshops.

MY husband spent $300 at Overstock.com. I love my ring, though. It isn't the price, it is the love put into it.

My fiance and I don't make much, but my ring cost us $2,600. My fiance said that just because we don't make much, doesn't mean I should have a cheap ring. We are paying payments on it.
