There are two ways. The first way is to use the harsh chemicals like RID. It's basically like shampooing your hair with insecticide. After you wash, it is very important to comb out all the eggs. The comb comes in the package. You can use the gel that helps loosen the eggs, and it makes a big diffrence. The last step is to spray all your furniture with lice spray. Spray all your mattresses. Wash all clothes, bedding and towels in hot water, and put in the dryer for at least 20 minutes of heat. Any stuffed animals that your kids may have need to be washed in the washing machine and dried in the dryer, or they need to be tightly bagged in plastic for two weeks to suffocate any lice on them. That's one way. There is a more natural way to do it, and it really works well. Coat dry hair thoroughly with baby oil and put a shower cap on. Leave on for at least an hour (this suffocates the lice). Then, get a cat flea and tick comb ( in the pet aisle at any store), and start combing really well. The oil helps the eggs to slide out. After you pull it through your hair, wipe in on a paper towel and you will see any adult lice, but also lots of little specks that just look like specs of dirt. Those are just the babies. Comb, and comb, and comb, working in sections. The combing is the most important part. It's a pain in the butt, but if you don't do it, the eggs will just hatch and you will never get rid of the problem. After you comb thoroughly, wash your hair with clarifying shampoo. Even a cheap brand like Suave works fine. Just make sure it is clarifying. You have to wash your hair several times to get the oil out. Then use a little conditioner. Then get a product called Aussie Hair Insurance Leave in conditioner. Spray your hair thoroughly with this. It has tea tree oil in it, and lice hate tea tree oil. Spray your hair every day with the tea tree oil and it will help prevent it. Then, using a good vacuum, thoroughly vacuum all mattresses, furniture, etc. Do the same thing listed above with your linens and childrens stuffed animals. Here's the bad news. Whichever one you do, you have to do it all again in 7 days. That way if you missed a few eggs and they hatch, you will get the last of them. If you use the tea tree oil conditioner daily, they shouldn't come back. Also, using any product in your hair, such as gel or hair spray helps prevent getting them. Lice need a clean hair shaft to attach to. So, using product in your hair every day will help avoid the problem. If you have kids, do the same with them. Good luck. E-mail if you have any questions. We live in an area where lice outbreaks happen at the school a lot, so I've sort of become an expert on the subject.

When I was growing up, my mom always made me wear hairspray to school, she said it would keep me from getting lice and it worked for me. If you get it try, Nix Shampoo with a very fine tooth comb.

no matter what kind of medication you use make sure you remove all the nits or they can just hatch out again,
it's very time consuming but that medication is very strong
and hard on the skin. Don't forget to wash everything
and put pillows, stuffed animals and in the dryer, the heat
of the dryer should take care of them. Good Luck!!!!

Rid-x. You also have to wash your rugs, furniture, and bedding with HOT water. If one nit is left alive, you have to start the whole mess over again.
One exception: You will have to bathe the family pets as well, but I don't suggest using hot water on them. You may want to take them to a grooming service. They deal with this issue all the time. And be sure to thoroughly was your car carpets, upolstery, etc.

RID, and other OTC medications, can be used. The old remedy was to shave half of the affected area, and set the unshaved area on fire, and stab them with an icepick, when they come running out.

Don't forget the special little comb that extracts the eggs from the scalp. My boys ended up getting buzz cuts and it made the process much easier.
