You might need a visa depending on your country of citizenship. There is a relatively small number of countries for which CN doesn't require a visa - if you visit CN as a tourist for a short period of time. These are mostly EU countries and few others. Green card won't do you any good going to Canada, but off course you want to have it to enter US.

Before Bush entered the office you could just drive into Canada with any form of identication, i.e., drivers license, or state id. I believe that now you are required to present a passport at the border to enter Canada.

You need your native country's passport and your alien registration card to get back into the US. Canada will let you in with a passport (depending on where you're from, there may be additional requirements).

You do need a birth certificate if u reside in the US and want to visit Canada. They won't accept a drivers license as acceptable proof anymore.

Since you are not a US citizen, you will have to carry your passport and your Green Card. Whether you need a visa will depend on what country you are a citizen of.
