It is not a matter of intelligence. Cats and doga are wired differently. A cat can learn mechanical things like opening doors easily. A dog will whine even if access is easy. On the other hand, dogs are quick to pick up words and associate them correctly.

The dumbest cat is still smarter than the smartest dog. I adore dogs and have both a dog and 2 cats at home now. The cats are thinking deep thoughts. The dog wants to make everyone happy and do what is expected. The cat is plotting and planning. No contest. Cats are from the Egyptian goddess Bastet and they know it.

Both are smart in thier own ways....I have 2 dogs and 4 cats trust me I know. For example my cats can all open doors but the dogs cant. However the dogs can learn to do cool tricks like, spin rollover, speak, heel up etc but the cats cant (I have tried) It doesnt make one smarter than the other it just makes them smarter about things they like to do. It is just like people....a person who knows all about mechanics is smart about that and a person who knows all about biology is smart about that just because the mechanic doesnt know about biology or the biologist doesnt know about mechanics doesnt make one smarter than the other it just makes them smarter in thier own field of interest. I truly believe intelligence can't be measured because everyone is smarter about certain things they are good at or enjoy.

If someone was breaking into my house my dogs would bark at the door and my cats would hide. If the intruder got in and gave my dogs some rib bones my dogs would be in love and call off the attack. My cats would still be hiding. Dogs are bribe-able, cats are stubborn and set in their ways. I pick cats, but I like dogs more.

JRW has obviously never owned a cat or else he wouldn't have written what he did. Our cat that makes up her own games when she feels like playing and none of her humans are cooperating. She will take a ball, jump up on the sofa, drop it and then attack it...or she will take a ball, drop it into her Pop's big tennis shoe and work and dig and roll around until she can get it out and then drops it back in and starts all over again. She greets us at the door when we arrive home and sits and cries at the door when we leave. She considers the basement bedroom "her" room and will do everything in her power to get one of her humans to go down there with her to play. She sits at the top of the stairs and when she sees she has your attention, she will make a "coo" sound and run down the steps. If you don't follow, she'll "coo" again with a little more vigor and run back up, sit and wait for your attention and do it all again. She is comical, lovable, ornery and spoiled rotten. I wouldn't trade her for two cute puppies and a duckling.

Oh, and to answer your question, I think they're both smart, just in different ways.

Dogs are probably smarter. Generally species that evolved in groups like humans, chimps and crows are smarter then similar species that evolved individualistic lifestyles... at least in terms of our human view on what makes an animal smart.

Dogs. Cats are best at catching mice and sleeping. Dogs can learn tricks and are a better pet by far,.

They're smart in different ways. But one thing's for sure: Cats definitely THINK they're the smartest!
