Live a good life because you should, not because you fear punishment.
I would chose the first, I believe in god but I have no emperical evidence to back it up. If I'm wrong it won't matter, if I'm right, it just might.

Neither.
What matters is how you conduct your life (your operational values), not what you believe (your conceived values).
Check out Near Death Experience research. It happens to people of every religion and philosophy. Even to atheists.
Invariably, they find that we are all held accountable for our actions in life. Which means that at the very least there is a Higher Power.
In light of that, striving to live by The Golden Rule and serving others is far more important than just having faith in a God.
What you are is much more relevant to The Light on the Other Side than what you conceive to be God.
Heaven is achieved through deed, not creed.

I think you know the answer to that one already. If we live for the Lord all our lives, then die and find out there is no God...what have I lost.
If I live my life without faith and believing and die, then I lose my very soul. Know the saying, "there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun."

This is Pascal's Wager. Using his system no matter how small a probability you put on God existing, you come to the conclusion that it is best to believe in God.

number 1. because if u die and u find out there wasnt a God, then you have lost nothing, and gained nothing. but if u die and find out that there is a God, then your burning in hell. and that cant be fun.

Neither is better in my opinion. They are both fear based. For me, why worry about what will happen when you're body is "dead". Why not be "free" while you live and experience a higher consciousness, that way you will "know" and won't have to "believe" in anything.

Well if I die and there is no God, as depressing as that sounds now, I suppose my dead self wouldn't know or care really since I was..you know..dead.

live in faith, die. Safety net.
If there is no god, as atheists believe. Grave is final. boom. done.
If there is a God...what will those who didn't believe...
why plan a trip you don't believe in taking?
