Cutting is a coping skill that some people use when they are having problems dealing with hurt. When people cut on themselves, it can leave scars and at times I have seen someone seriously injure themselves while cutting. If other coping skills aren't identified, cutting usually becomes more frequent and severe.

(I must amend my answer, now that I understand "cutting" means drawing blood from your own body).
I believe this is unhealthy both physically and mentally for several reasons. Physically, you're leaving yourself open for infection. Also, as the need becomes greater for a "deeper" cut each time, there is a very real threat of physical harm--and dangerous youthful dares.
Also, there is the question of scarring. Scars are permanent. And this is an activity that you will not be proud of later in life. Yet the scars will always be there to remind you of this.
Mentally, it is just plain unwholesome. You are disfiguring yourself, and bordering on suicide. It is not a sign of a healthy mind. I would talk with someone whose opinion you truly respect about it. And also about your life as you are leading it.
Hope is a wonderful feeling. It's all around us. It's in the faces of children, it's in the sunlight, it's in Nature. It is peaceful. It is in music. Hope is in Love. I'd suggest slowing it down and taking a deep look inside. Is there a root of unhappiness? Can you find activities (reading, helping, working out, swimming, working, athletics) that will help you feel better about yourself?
You are young. We've all gone through difficult periods. "Cutting" yourself is not an answer. It will only bring more woes and perhaps a trip to the emergency room (and tho that may be what you want--to draw attention to what's troubling you--it's too dangerous, child). Find a good support person to talk with.

And for those who say "why on earth would you want to do that," read on . . .
Cutting is bad because it uses up the bodies ability to repair itself on something that inherently doesn't HAVE TO HAPPEN. You don't (well, I can't say YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT YOURSELF, when I know some do) so i'll stop that sentence mid-thought. However, cutting isn't "bad" in the way that its evil or going to send you to hell. Its bad because its sad in the fact that the only way you know your alive is when you feel pain. When you see the blood come out. And that isn't right. Life should be MORE than something you just survive, it should be so much more! People don't cut because it feels good, people cut so they know they're alive, because most of the time they can feel NOTHING ELSE. This allows them to feel something, anything, even if its agony.

cutting from what i know is done because you are in severe psychological pain, making the cut and feeling it physically helps you to actually relieve you inner pain. The cut to your body hurts less than the psychological pain you're in. Its not healthy for one because you can DIE from it, get infections, ect. But mainly, because you're not really dealing with the psychological issues attached to why your cutting yourself. If you aren't able to get to the bottom of the cutting which can be a very difficult thing to face and would require some intense therapy, you will never be able to stop cutting yourself. It's almost like that's the easy way out. You cut and don't have to look deeper into why you cut, its a quick but dangerous fix. If you or someone you know does this, please research it and get help,. God bless.

Cutting is a form of self mutilation, and signifies inner pain. It is not done to kill ones self or for attention which are two of the main reason's people think its done for.
cutting is not a healthy release of pain, in fact its not even release in the first place. Its a way yoyour body tricks u into believing ur better, when its not doing anything but making you worse. Cutting or any self mutilation is VERY addicting and very hard to overcome. It leaves outer scars as well as inner scars. Its not a healthy form of dealing with pain, and that is why its bad. You really need to find other forms of releasing that pain and ultimately dealing with the problem.

Cutting is the self-mutilation of different parts of the body usually not easily visible from others. With the pain is the feeling of deserving to be punished and relief after the actual injury. It is usually done by individuals with low self esteem that feel out of control with their environment and or relationships. They are desperately in need of validation, self-worth, and coping mechanisms that are effective to deal with their lives. It also can represent self hatred in some. Cutting is not a good thing. These people need understanding and effective help. Thanks for your posting.

It is not only down grading your inner self, but also the way people in all your life will look upon you, now and in your future...
Most of all The Lord up above should be your biggest concern in the matter of judgement...
Definately a bad thing...
Do not allow your future to be scarred or taken for such a stupid thing, that truly makes no sense...
Good Luck, and God Bless...

Cutting, without the proper supervision and or equipment, can not only lead to excessive blood loss, but it can open the body to infecion. My wife thinks that it seems as if a girl who cuts herself doesn't value herself. She adds, though, that it really depends why and how you cut yourself. People were cutting their selves in the Middle Ages for medical reasons, she adds. But I think of course, that was probably supervised by a Druid priest or community healer.

because even though it "feels" good at the moment the scars stay and later hut because they just remind you of why u did it. not only that, but is addicting and becomes the first thing you do whenever your hurt. i notice you said the question was hypothetical... you think... which tells me your cutting or thinking about it. please let me tell you stop and dont. its hurts to cut (i dont mean physically) and it hurts everyone around you. you'll loose people you love too.

Cutting is bad because you can die from blood loss and get really bad infections. Cutting is also a really stupid idea. I know too many people at my school who do it. My former friends used to do it as well, and it is so ridiculous. Sorry if that offends anyone, but seriously, it's stupid.
