It depends on the illness there are so many
Bipolar
Depression
Personality disorders
Schizo effective disorders
Schizophrenia
Identity disorders
Obsessive compulsive disorders
anxiety disorders
alcoholic illness

the list goes on and on.
Most are genetic, some are learned behaviors others are a manifestation of both. Reversing will never occur. It's a big business to treat and maintain a person. Too find a cure that is all encompassing is impossible with the current thought and sciences of our contemporary world. At best the first step would be to recognize the illness first and treat it with therapy and medication.

If certain genes could be isolated and then removed they is a slight chance, but even then many are manifestations created by society like when a person commits horrible crimes against people or humanity a lawyer might use the mental illness diagnosis to help his or her client.

Then there is the person who might not have certain qualities to exist in today's mainstream society so if they are lucky enough to have a doctor who is compassionate enough to give them a diagnosis of a certain mental disorder it opens a few doors of hope for a better life in regard to social services and welfare.

So reversing such a thing as mental illness would not only be very difficult but it could be detrimental to the society that generations have created and perpetuated.

Reverse mental illness? Do you think Mental Illness is like a recording tape? That you can just write something over it and everything will all be fine? You can’t write over memories. They stay. The worst ones are the ones most deeply etched into your mind too. Your mind “thinks” by making connections between neurons. As much as the computer crowd loves to liken the mind to a PC, nothing could be further from the truth. Your brain actually changes it’s structure as you think. (Imagine the main processing chip in your PC subtly changing its wiring every few seconds!) The more you think in a certain way, (whether it be in a certain mood, or painting, or throwing a baseball, or even doing math problems) the more connections are made and the less energy and effort it takes to think in that way. Your mind essentially forms super highways to assist it in thinking along the lines it needs to think. Once the mental illness is established, you can’t erase it. That would be like filling in the Grand Canyon. The best you can do is finding alternative ways to think and work very hard at using them – it is extraordinarily difficult – vastly more difficult that recovering from a broken leg or something. Even with a lifetime of effort, you will only succeed part way. Mental illness is an adaption to an extreme situation.

A more important question, I think, is how do we prevent mental illness. That would be a lot easier. Poor and abusive parenting causes well over 90% of mental illness. You don’t have to beat or rape your children to abuse them. Being unsupportive, belittling and ignoring them will cause a huge amount of problems leading to mental illness. Most people have children for the wrong reason any way. That starts out from a sick and selfish point of view. They want to “make” their children into something. They have no interest in supporting their children’s search to find out who they are as persons.

In a world of vast over population why do we let just anyone be parents? It’s harder to get a car license than be a parent. You can be a plain old cruel, self-centered nit-wit, but its still OK for you to have children.

You can't just "reverse" mental illness no more than you can just "reverse" cancer or diabetes.

Stop giving a new name to everything and excuses to be idiots. Practice self control. Bipolar and hyperactivity in kids are good examples. Excuse to be buttheads and excusses not to mind your parents or anyone else. I'm sure there are legitimate casses but giving kids sugar..and excuse to battering by drunks is not one of them!

Proper psychiatric treatment followed with motherly care. A mental person should not be provoked. she should be loved. She should be kept under watch.
