There are a couple of things you can do to treat it yourself. 1) You can cut a small "v" into the middle of your toenail. This will enable the toenail to grow inward "together and pull it away from the edges of the nailbed. or 2) as it get longer you can file the nail straight across. The gial is to keep the sharp toenail edge away from the tender nailbed in the corners.
If the problem is really SEVERE it may require actual surgery. It is done out-patient in the doctors office, is rather paintful, but heals completely in just a few weeks. The downside is if not cared for properly it can re-occur.

When I went to the dr., he cut the toenail out of the skin, then placed cotton in the infected part, cut open and drained the wound of pus. This cost me $500.00, including pain medication, which I needed. You can technically do this yourself, but it will hurt like everything!
