My mom has a blanket (her favorite) that her kitten always sucks on. Is there a reason for this? The kitten is 3 or 4 months old.

She or he was probably taken away from its mother too early, AND/OR they miss their mother.. my cat does the same thing.. in fact she suckles on my finger.. I asked my vet, and this is normal. She is just happy or at home with whatever she suckles on.. it is all good.

The kitty misses it's mommy! Beware though I had one kitty that sucked and chewed holes in a blanket then I was worried that the kitty was going to be sick. So I moved the blanket somewhere she could not lay on it anymore and that solved my problem. The kitten will grow out of this stage it took mine about a year it is also possible that the kitten was taken away from it's mommy too soon and did not get the time with her he needed.

Your kitten finds this soothing. I have a cat that is 9 years old that was weaned too early that still sucks on blankets. Cats are like people in a lot of ways. They can do things that turn into habits that they do just because it makes them feel better.

It's warm and soft and reminds her of mama cat. Kittens (and cats) mimic nursing as a comfort behavior. The behavior is more common in kittens that were separated from their mother early, but can occur in any cat. Some cats seem more prone to nursing on objects or people, perhaps due to anxiety or incomplete social development. Some people call it 'smurgling' after the slurping sound they sometimes make. So long as it's not excessive there's little reason to worry.

I have a 16-pound cat about three years old who still nurses on my shirt. I raised him from 3 weeks old, so he thinks I'm his mom.

This should be distinguished from wool-sucking, which is more common in Siamese. This behavior looks similar but involves pulling out and swallowing fibers from fabric objects. It's thought to be a kind of obsessive-compulsive behavior, but the practical point is that eating fibers can cause severe gastrointestinal problems.

A lot of kittens do that. It's just a comforting habit, like a child sucking her thumb. Usually, they outgrow it, but my niece has a full grown cat that still sucks on his tail.

You could discourage the behavior by squirting the cat with a small water gun every time she sucks on the blanket. If you are consistent, it should help.

I was wearing a shirt with a ruffled neckline once and my little kitten started sucking on it. I had to give him the shirt because every time I would wear it he would suck. Kittens who are taken away from their mamas too soon will suck on things - its a comfort thing. Don't worry. The kitten will grow out of it.

My cat does the same thing. I believe it gives them the feeling of nursing their mother, especially if they were taken away at too young of an age.
