They are called Indulgences. Technically they were never sold, because holy things (blessings etc) cannot be sold. It was an abuse to attempt to sell them.
Indulgences are still around and they cannot reduce your time in purgatory. We have no way of knowing how long purgatory even lasts--it could be instantaneous.
The time associated with an indulgence is the amount of penance it is equivalent to. This time assignment dates back to the days when Confessions and penances were long and public. The penance for something like adultery could take years.

If you haven't seen the movie Luther, see it. It was about that sort of ' indulgence ' thing.
The Roman Catholics will tell you good things about it, but like so many other things they have to re interpret scripture to do so. You cannot ' buy ' your way into heaven, and you cannot ' buy ' someone out of purgatory. There really isn't a purgatory.

You seem to be confused, probably misled by some professional anti-Catholics. You must be referring to indulgences, which are not a middle ages thing. They have been around from the beginning of Christianity and still are in use today. There were some abuses by individuals that the Church has had to put a stop to at various times in history, as there are abuses in all facets and all times that the Church has to guard against.

Still in use today? What a surprise.
HAs anyone told you that purgatory does not exist...created for a way to collect extra. Jesus taught Heaven or hell. Nothing on purgatory.

Indulgence, and it was good way for the church to make money, by scaring the innocent multitudes who were ignorant enough to buy something when all they had to do was get down on their knees and ask Jesus to forgive them for their sins, and to come live in their hearts.
