I have done a ton of research on OCD and i have it. You need to get to a good psychotherapist and a psychiatrist and get treatment started immediately. It can get out of hand quickly. Mental illnesses tend to get worse as people get older. DON"T lose your patience in finding a good therapist/doctor/medication that suits you. It is difficult to find a good combo but sooooo worth it. I am generally not a fan of medication except in extreme circumstances, but OCD is so neurological that it really is helped by medication. My life totally changed for the better when I began taking Paxil ten years ago. I am living proof that therapy and medication work. So much so that it caused me to want to go to college and grad school to be a therapist and i'm almost done my education.
The most effective drug for OCD is clomiprimine (anafranil) but it tends to have too many unpleasant side effects for most people. Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft have good reuputations for treating OCD. Also cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy is also very effective in treating OCD.
A child can't catch OCD from you by watching you. they may mimic your behavior but not for the same reason you do it, so dont worry.
I wrote a research paper for grad school a few months back about current OCD treatments. It's about 18 pages long plus references. If you want to read it, email me at badfish281@aol.com, or if you have any more questions. good luck!

You absolutely MUST go see a doctor about this. There are many medications and treatments for OCD, and they can be very effective. If you experience side effects from one medication, you can try another one until you find the one that works best for you. Don't delay -- make an appointment with a doctor right now! There is help for OCD -- you just have to ask!

Yes, by what you write you have OCD. Go to Yahoo! and search for DSMV-IV (Dianostics and Statistical Manual IV) that physchiatrists use to diagnose people with disorders. Type in "dsmv-iv, ocd" and then search through the results until you find the definition. I too have OCD and used to clean my house daily, washing the light bulbs, vaccuuming, etc. But thanks to my medication, I can look at even dust now and not be freaked! Woot! I have free time!
If you don't feel you can afford a psychiatrist call your County Mental Health Clinic and they will base your visits on your salary so that it is extremely affordable to you and your family. You'll still get your medication also. I see a private one, but I've been going to him since '93 and the same psychologist also). Its great that your getting help finally. It really does free you up for other things in your life.

your doctor can help you through this. there are many medications out there that are very very helpful for people with OCD - one of these is Prozac, which is available generic and is very inexpensive. Another one of the latest gold standards in OCD medications is Zoloft. currently, it is not available generic, but will be available generic (and therefore cheap) towards the end of July. your doctor (or a psychologist) and you can discuss your symptoms, your compulsive behaviors, and find a medication/medications that work for you. also, i have seen that people with severe OCD that is running their life benefit sometimes from talking to some sort of therapist, who can help you to confront your behaviors and to find alternate behaviors that are positive or less compulsive. it is a hard thing to do, especially since alot of these behaviors are ingrained into your brain, but oftentimes successful if you really have the urge to succeed, which is sounds like you do. good luck!
