Buy the Mazda RX-8. I own one and it is awesome.

I love the RX-8, more for the fact that is uses a rotary engine than anything else. However this is also something you need to consider. The RX-8 does not use a standard engine and may need a specialist in some areas of repair and maintenance.
Things you need to consider is the RX-8 being a rotary will burn a little oil because of lubrication of the seals. So you'll need to make sure you check oil semi-frequently.
The RX-8 is lighter and faster off the line, part of the advantages of a rotary and would be my choice.
If you're not into working and learning about how your car works though I'd stay with a vehicle you can easily pay someone else to repair, which would be the Eclipse. Mitsubishi have had significant gains in product quality and have a pretty good warranty, so the previously mentioned post and her experience may not apply.

Mazda is owned by Ford, but they still do things their own way,
and it's a well-made automobile. Mitsubishi Eclipse is a great little
car. But I personally would be weary of buying a Mitsubishi because I've read they are considering pulling out of the American market if sales don't improve. I suppose it wouldn't
effect your ownership too much, but I wouldn't be comfortable
with it, nonetheless.

Here the break down
RX-8 PRO- Fast, light engine, easy to drive
CON- Rotary engine is still not a stable tect. A lot of them
already reported caught on fire like the RX-7
Eclipse- PRO- Save gas, fun to drive. BIG SOUND SYSTEM
CON- Design get sucker each year. Not a drift system.
New Eclipse is not popular in the underground
world
HIGHLY recommend- Lancer EVO or 350Z

Mazda RX-8!!!!!!!! Eclipse doesnt come anywhere near!!!
Hmmmm................ i'm felling jealous that you are even thinking of getting one!!! You will surely get the looks whe you take it out!!! And pls take me for a ride once you buy it!!

I believe the RX8 performs slightly better due to lighter weight and lower center of gravity, along with being rear wheel drive.
If you intend to drive in slippery conditons, the RX8 is HORRIBLE !
I have driven both, and prefer the styling and performance of the RX8 to the Mits V6; however I believe that the Mits is still a fast car, and has a longer warranty.

personaly I would go with the rx-8 the ride is awesome and it gets better with the upgrades too!
