Starbucks is mediocre , but they have the monopoly. They just recently moved in next to my favorite Italian coffee shop and promptly drove them out of business. The small business just couldn't compete even thought they made a great latte. Starbucks is overpriced for the quality of their product. They are the Walmart of the coffee industry.

You know that story about "Jack and the Beanstalk"? Well, this is the story of "Starbuck's and the Magic Beans"... One day, someone said to Starbuck: "hey dude, how are we gonna make some money, I barely have the 75 cents for a cup of coffee"? Starbucks pondered this question for a while and said: "My friend! We will be rich, my Uncle sent me a special bag of magic coffee beans that when mixed with plain, ordinary water, makes a magical elixir so strong, that no one will be able to resist". Starbuck's friend just shook his head and said: "You're full of cra*, no one will fall for that!" Starbuck just smiled and declared: "This is America! If people can sell pet rocks , I can sell coffee for at least $4.00 per cup!"; and he did...THE END

Depending on where you go Starbucks coffee can be more or less. I remember when I want to NY a venti coffee was $4.25 I left.
But in San Francisco, CA its $1.75
So Starbucks prices it by what people will pay.

Good question. I've had maybe 3 or 4 cups in my life from Starbucks. What a RIP-OFF.

Because people are sheep. They have been trained to think that if something is the highest price of whatever it is, it must be better than the other brands and much more fashionable. And of course, sooo much better than they could make at home. Try buying whole beans and grinding and brewing them fresh every time you make coffee at home. You will love it!

simply bcos the american society is very dependent on the coffee industry and they are willing to pay extremely high prices for drinks that can be easily made and wouldn't cost as much which causes starbucks to harp on this dependency and make the market work for them

As long as people will pay the price, Starbucks will happily keep selling it to them at that price. It seems to be a profitable business.

They use different ingrediants than most coffee places, they make a lot of stuff right from scratch...go to a place like Tim Hortons and you will see them using some sort of vending machine...Plus like you said earlier, the coffee is pretty good :)

Supply and demand. Demand is high because people love to be "seen" with the trendiest crap. Enter Starbucks. If lots of people want it then charge out the nose for it.

most coffee shop are pricey. people will still payy thoug because they want their coffee. also starbucks doesn't run people out of business, they only open thier doors and the people come in. the other coffee shops who closed when starbucks came to town, can't really blamed on starbucks. blame the customers who left the other shops to go to starbucks.
