The only reason you don't hear more about how effective it is that most of those on the receiving end don't live to tell the story.

Napoleon is the one who named artillery King of Battle because of the fact artillery had a great impact on the battlefield. He was the first general to mass artillery. Queen of Battle for infantry came a lot later as people did not know the original reason for the name King of Battle.

King Of Battle

It is not the King of battle. Only people in FA think of it as being the king. There is only one King of Battle. The Infantry is King and rules. All other parts of the military are there to help the Infantry to accomplish the mission. The Infantry is the tip of the spear. But, without a strong spear shaft, the tip would not work. The infantry needs all parts of the military to work in unison and conjunction to work properly.
Without Infantry, the rest of the combat arms can''t do anything but make too much noise. Look what is going on in Iraq and Afganistan. There isn't enough infantry in either country. The shock and awe at the begining of the Iraq war on 20 March was just a bunch of real loud noise and lights. It didn't accomplish 10 % of what Bush told us it would. I am biased though. I spent 10 1/2 years in the army. I was in 1st Inf Div, 1/28th Inf. I was also a scout in D Trp 5th Ar Cav. The only reason for combined arms, multi-service missions is to support the infantry on the ground.

Field Artillery is sent in to neutralize or destroy areas by missiles,
cannons & rockets. The battle will fight until they feel they will not win & then the "king of the battle" comes in & finishes off the enemy.

General Andrew Jackson is credited with the name when he was praising the guns (Field Artillery) coming to help them.

Because it is big, loud and effective. It strikes fear through the enemy because they can do nothing about it but die. Anyone knows that they will always bail you out in the pinch and when used in combined arms is a thing of beauty. When they land around you it is clear to see why it is called that. Anyone knows that infantry is not the King or the tip of the spear it is combat arms in today's battlefield they are only a piece in a puzzle but I would give the king title to the big guns any day and I am not FA...
