Okay, here are the basics of tie dying:
1) Start with fabric dye. Food coloring is often recommended, but it doesn't penetrate the fabric deeply enough to be as effective.
2) Boil your water and then mix the dye, for optimum color absorbtion.
3) To dye: start by twisting the fabric from the center for a spiral pattern, and then secure it at various spots with rubber bands.
Then submerge the item in the dye. For various colors, dip just the part you want a certain color in the dye.
4) After dying, take the bands off and rinse in cold water. This will help prevent the dye from bleeding.
5) Wash garment by itself in a washing machine, if you wash with other garments, it will stain.
6) Dry in a dryer, and then wear or whatever.

Use food coloring as the dye and use rubber bands in the area that you want to tie dye!

I don't know much about tie-dying, but I DO know that food coloring will fade as you wash it; don't waste your time with it, unless you are practicing. Instead of wraping "points of fabric " pulled up, try fan-type folding with the fabric, then tieing it in places. I haven't tried this but i"ve read about it. Just a different idea.

We just took white t shirts, took rubber bands and tide the material up in different places on the shirt and put them in dye then untied them and hung them out to dry. Got different patterns all over the shirt.

I LOVE TYE DYEING. i just did it yesterday actually. make sure you use lots of rubber bands/strings to keep the folds tight because if you dont the designs wont be as visible and it may just be a blob of color. Also, dont be afraid to try your own designs because as long as you use lots of color anything will look cool. Have fun and tye dye everything you can...shirts, pants, socks, hats, bags, gloves, whatever. o and make sure that it is made of cotten because otherwise it wont work. if its only 50% cotton the colors will be lighter.
