The theme of the Bible is the establishing of God's Kingdom which promises to bring so many blessings to the earth and to mankind. The Kingdom is a real government--nothing like the governments we have now. God's Kingdom has a reigning King. It is his own Son, Jesus. Under this government, the earth will become a paradise just as it was in the beginning, the dead will be brought back to life, there will be no more hunger, sickness or death, Older ones will become young again, no more poverty, pollution, or terrorism. Satan the devil will be done away with. Mankind will live in total peace forever.
Psalms 22:26 --"The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever."
Psalms 37:11 --"But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."
Isaiah 33:24 --"And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity."
When you recite the Lord's Prayer which includes "let your Kingdom come;let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"--then this is what you are praying for.

The bible is a very big book and contains lots of information, so it is easy to see how it may be difficult for a person to miss the main purpose of it if not informed by someone who has studied it. In short, it is God's self revelation to the people. It explains the history of the earth, focusing on the relationship between people and God.
The bible begins with genisis which contains a historical recitation of the beginning of everything, when God created a perfect sinless world. It then progresses to the mistakes humans have made, from the very first sin. As God is just, all sin must be punished, but once man started sinning, it continued. God executed a plan to have another, his son Jesus, take the punishment for the sins of all who believe upon himself.
Through the historical narratives and letters of the Bible, people can get to know of God and, through his grace, be justified by faith and restored.

To oppress the average people. This was done to great effect until about 300 years ago when common people started being educated. In the name of christianity people were deliberately denied education or the ability to question the status quo. If some of the educated clergy raised questions, they were demonised and punished. This held back european culture for 1000 years. (fortunately it was progressing in non christian areas of the world)

No, i havnt read the Bible, why should i? Im not one for ancient story books.
Lets face facts here friend, a book that says, basically, 'Their is a mighty God, he exist's because i say so'..come on, surely you can see the problem. If we want to resort to a 'faith' argument, thats again a dead end. To say 'their is no proof, only faith' is a complete cop out in the face of defeat.
