I'm looking for personal ideas, working psychological or sociological theories, or anything else you might come up with. The concept of soul mates seems to be nearly universal among human cultures, and I'm curious why this might be.

i think (for me) it started with my parents. the idea of growing up finding my special soul mate who I'd spend the rest of my life with started when i was a child watching them. also look at the magazines, cosmo quizes, movies and television says we'd better find our soul mates it'll be too late. i dont think soul mates are realistic, if so..i must have missed the class on how to find him.

99% of humans are pair bonded. It is in our genes/dna, whichever, to pair up and reproduce... It's a basic need in humans. we are not solitary animals. A "soul mate" is a belief, not a reality. We are wired to look for a mate, but the idea of a "soul mate" puts a romantic spin on the fact that we are just that, animals.
