If the state supplies two plates, (ie if you see two plates on other vehicles in your state) it is the law to have both plates on the vehicles.
Some states only supply one plate. For those states, the plate must be placed on the rear of the car.
In California, it is illegal to drive with only one license plate and you will be ticketed, unless you are driving a car from another state that requires only one plate (Such as Alabama).
So if you were driving your car which has Alabama plates in Illinois, and the state of Alabama only supplied one plate, then you can't get ticketed in Illinois. If you're driving an Illinois car in Illnois and Illnois requires two plates, then yes you're stuck with the ticket. If you lost the other plate you'll have to go to the local DMV and get a new set of plates, and they'll make you pay for them also. (At least they do in California)

Just wanted to let you know yes Illinois is one of those states that you have to have a front license plate. I am from there and I recently bought a car that was from Georgia. Had to get a license plate holder for the front of the car. Didn't give it much thought when I still had the temporary on.

There is a law in some states that requires you to have front and rear license plates on your car. Just check at your local License Office and they will tell you. Alabama does not require them.

Yes, but only in cetain states.
I don't know many at all, but I can speak for Ohio where you ARE required by law to have front plates. That said, there's little to no enforcement of that law -- I've had my last two cars without front plates for about 8 years, with no problems.

Kato is correct, this is a state perogative. I've lived in MI and CO - in MI front plates are not needed and not even issued. In CO they are required. You can find out the answer for your state at your local DMV office.

God, I hate that regulation! Drove my automobile from 1982 to 1995 without the front registration code and became by no potential informed i necessary one. faster or later, even as procuring in Laguna coastline, CA, I parked my automobile legally and paid the meter. when I back slightly later, there became a cost ticket on my windshield for no longer HAVING A FREAKING the front registration code! less costly shot, IMHO. I no longer in ordinary words had to pay the cost ticket, yet I had to fork out extra funds to the DMV for a the front registration code. obviously, I by no potential shopped in Laguna back on the grounds that they have obviously were given a "make funds scam" happening antagonistic to the regular public. when I requested the law enforcement officials WHY this became a regulation, they suggested because of gangs. I requested if gangs were commonly used to flee from the law enforcement officials using their autos backward, yet i imagine it went over their heads. I doubt absolutely everyone grant you with a complicated time about this, yet in the adventure that they do, you've my condolences! yet to be possibility-free, do not keep in Laguna any time quickly....

In California, yes. In Kentucky and Florida, they only give you one plate (instead of a pair), which goes on back. Each state has its own laws.
In Mexico, not only is it required, but each pair of plates has one labeled 'Trasera' (front) and 'Delantera' (rear). that keeps people from putting the two plates in the pair on two different cars.

As Kato said, it varies by state. Do the other cars where you live have front plates? That should answer your question.

Simple rule: If they issue you 2 plates, they expect one on the front, and one on the back.
