go to www.akc.org and look up "events".

Labs can be shown in breed competition (conformation) or obedience or field work or agility. There are also dock jumping competitions where the dog leaps into the water after a plastic retrieving dummy.

read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV, but he doesn't train for dog shows.

Talk to local lab breeders, they'll know a lot about what qualities make a good show dog

Talk to some breeders.

Go to some handling classes. It is sad when I see an unprepared newbie with an untrained dog. You will be able to meet people there who can help you get started too.

Check out www.akc.org
It should give you some basic info about showing your dog.
Then find a local dog club in your area. They will sponsier shows in your area and you can find out from them what you need to do to enter you dog.
Good luck.
