I own 4 firearms. I own them for self defense when I'm in public and I own some that are for home defense. I was raised in a home where I wasn't allowed to own a cap gun. BB guns were out of the question. But I don't see owning a gun now as making up for something lost from childhood.
Working in law enforcement has taught me some very important things. One is that every person is responsible for their own safety. If somebody kicks in your door and you manage to dial 911 before he reaches you, he's got time to kill you and get away before a cop ever reaches your home. But if you know how to defend yourself, you've got a chance to do just that; defend yourself.
Responsible gun ownership just requires some education, kind of like owning a goldfish; except it's a goldfish that can kill people.

I own serveral ( and used to own dozens) I collected guns of varoius types for many years.
I own now basicly a shot gun for home protection, a rifle for hunting ( or to be able to hunt if I wanted to although I gave up hunting a few years ago.
I also own several handguns, some of which I carry with me most of the time.
It is a constitutional right and I belive almost a obligation to, since the right was to make the government know it can not force government on the people, and that a armed people always has the opportunity to overthrow its government if needed.

Geez, maybe we need to take a video inventory of our guns. I personally have four 22s (2 rifles, 1 semi auto and 1 revolver), .270 rifle, three shotguns (20 g., and 2 12 g.), an AR-15 and my beloved Colt .45 that has been customized by Wilson Combat. I have no idea how many guns my DH owns, but we need to buy a second safe. '
Why do we own guns. We live in the rural south - everyone has guns! If the good guys don't have 'em the bad guys sure as heck will!!!! DH is a cop and I am a former cop. We enjoy shooting sports and we used to enjoy hunting.

I don't own a gun, but my fiance does, and we live together. I can shoot it very accurately, as I served 6 years in the Navy and was trained on various types of handguns and rifles, and also my family hunted alot when I was a kid. My fiance has his gun for protection, and he also has a private investigator's license and a concealed weapon permit from our state. His job sometimes takes him into not-so-nice neighborhoods and he even had to lift his shirt and show his gun to a guy once who was being pushy in his attempts to bum money from my honey (lol). The guy had picked up a 40 bottle and wouldn't leave my guy alone. He did after he saw the gun. I believe in our 2nd ammendment right to bear arms, for that very reason. If the government makes it illegal for us law-abiding citizens to own guns, then only the criminals are going to have guns, because they all get them illegally anyway. And maybe, if more law-abiding citizens did have guns, and used them in self defense, then there would be fewer dead innocent victims, and more dead criminals. Note that I say "use them in self-defense" and try to keep the stupid comments to a minimum. I'm sure that someone's going to post something about me being a gun-toting psycho. And like someone above me said--I'd rather have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it.

My husband and I own what I like to call a small arsenal! We have several handguns and long guns (rifles and shot guns). We have them both for protection and for sport, leisure. We both have our carry permits and are able to carry our handguns with us.
I was raised in a home without guns and he has had guns his entire life. So when we started dating, I took skeet and trap shooting and handgun safety classes with him in college. I loved it. So we now buy a new gun ever so often and we go and have a day of shooting each one. My newest addition was my Lady Smith 9mm handgun! I love it. My major in college was also Criminal Justice so just in case I got into a profession where a gun was necessary, I would be prepared.

There's several here in the house. Mostly in case they're needed. Grew up with guns in the home - we were taught from early on they were to be respected not toys - even BB guns.
Present day - we have dogs but if someone is evil or psycho enough to come in the house (with a cop across the street) then they'll have no qualms of killing the dog. The law enforcement station is a good 20-30 minutes away - that's a lifetime to be in the hands of a psycho so it's not going to happen. Someone comes in with intention of harm without invitation they'll be found here. I hope it never comes to that but if it comes to a choice of who lives survival takes over.
It's not that there is anything "of value" here materially. But my life matters as does my other half's. Those cannot be replaced.

I own several guns. Took a concealed weapons and personal protection course about three years ago and have been carrying ever since.
I think it is the duty of every law abiding citizen to be prepared to protect themselves. It was also written in our 2nd Amendment that we have the right to bear arms for protection of this great nation.
Think about this: Imagine you suddenly find yourself in a situation where you are in grave danger. I think it is better to have a gun and never have to use it, than NEED a gun and not have it.

I have owned guns all of my life...got my first (shotgun) a gift from my mom when I was 12. All of my life I have a rifle, pistol, and shotgun. I stopped hunting a long time ago, but still enjoy target shooting. I am still a good shot. I can hit a can at 40 yards with my 9mm about half the time.
I used to belong to the NRA, but I quit when those loonies said they were supporting teflon coated bullets. (The only reason for teflon coating is to pierce body armor.) That's when we split the blanket. Guns, in the right hands, handled safely, are O.K. in our society

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States."

Born an raised American, Second Amendment lover, outdoor sporting competitor.
Anyone who says "guns are bad" and "guns are violence" obviously live in a bubble. Cars can be bad and violent but you don't say that when it saves you from having to walk for miles or you watch them on Nascar, do you..?
Unless you are a clay, paper, tin can, or criminal intruder, you are safe.
Anyone who says "guns are bad", "no one should own them", or any of the other gibberish garbage the anti's spew, I say this: SECOND AMENDMENT. Discussion over.
Criminals use anything they can get their hands on... Knives, cars, baseball bats, pipes, rope, crow-bars even duct tape... Should we have control and registration of those too? NO! Bad people are the problem, not guns.
Guns don't know what they are shooting or being shot at, all they know is "bang". To criminalize them is a lame cop-out from addressing the problem of bad people.
