maybe have a small reception, or if that doesnt work out, at least send announcements to our friends and family that we did get married. What is the proper etiquette for handling this?

We had a simple outdoor reception for my daughter after her wedding and it was simply beautiful. We invited only close friends and relatives to the wedding and the reception. We did it all ourselves...featuring white lights in the trees.....we set up rounds tables with white table cloths and simple decorations. We had a balloon archway that they entered into when they arrived at the reception from the wedding. We also had a DJ which was given to them as a gift from the grooms sister. We served crescent sandwiches with cheeses, turkey and beef, salads and fresh fruit and of course the traditional wedding cake. We did provide beer and had an open bar at the guest expense. With a little imagination and help from family and friends you can really make a simple wedding reception very elegant. We planned this wedding in only two weeks time and it was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended. IT CAN BE DONE!!

Parents are definitely going to want to be at the ceremony. Let them know along with siblings and best friend(s). Send out announcements of the wedding to let other relatives and friends know you got married. When you know if a small reception can be afforded send out invitations about 2 weeks before the shindig. You can word it along the lines .....

You get the idea. A small reception could be held in the backyard, a park, or where ever you would like. Keep the foods to relish trays, cheese and fruit trays, and finger sandwiches with cocktails, a keg, or punch.

If you want to do it by the book then you do have to send out invitations prior to the event planned.

May I make a suggestion?
Talk to your mom and dad. Since you don't have a big wedding I would say invite some of your closest friends to come after the wedding or on the day of the wedding to your house(or your mom+dad if they want to help), and have some of the stuff usually served at a wedding there. I got married like that, and it was lots of fun because we cleaned out the basement and made a party room there and everyone who came loved it because there was no "stiff" rules to obey. My mom made coldcuts, deviled eggs etc.etc., we also had coffee and a weddingcake and other goodies. Everyone who came was happy, the basement was cleaned up fast enough, we threw the paperplates and papercups away rather than having to wash dishes, and all this did not cut into the budget like a big reception. Good Luck

well, proper would be before the wedding so ppl can attend the reception and prepair for it (take days off work if needed and such) but if your trying to avoid certian ppl i would only send an announcement that states you got married, not anything to do with a reception.

If you can have the reception, do it. If you can't, that's ok too. You can always send out announcements after wards. If you have a reception, send the announcements to those who you were unable to invite. :)
