What's the reason?

This is an unpleasant subject. For all the folks who have already submitted answers: if the dog has attacked someone, chances are the city would put the dog to sleep.

Now, on to your question... my gf has volunteered at animal shelters and has worked with vets before... this is what she suggests:

Figure out what your dog's three favorite things are in the whole world (ex: eating, playing with a certain toy, chasing cats, singing with you in the kitchen). When an older dog no longer wants to do all three of his favorite activities, that's probably the best message you'll get from him that he's no longer happy with life.

If it's a younger dog, it needs to be checked out for some medical condition.

I would think that you and your family are at that point were the dog is suffering and you cannot make up your mind when the time has come. This is one of the hardest decisions to make. I think it would all depend on quality of life. If the dog has more bad days than good days, does not want to play, eat or interact and the pain has become constant. Of course you and your family knows the pet best and you must decide when it seems that the quality of life has began to decline. Take care.

I take it that the decision to do so
has probably already been taken by someone in your family, and that you are looking for reassurance... It is in no way an easy thing to deal with, but for whatever reasons this situation has come up, you must remember that pets are not people, I for one have had to put a dog to sleep, as well as a cat, we love our animals, and it seems very cold hearted, but what can you do... Treasure the memories...

That would depend on the situation and what condition of the dog.
THere should be a reason for having it done if your pet is in pain and you can not afford to make him better or they are unable to cure him then maybe it is time for you to let him go.
If it is for an aggression problems then that woud also be the right thing to do.
Only your family can make that decision. It ia very hard anytime you need to do that but if it is for thebest then that is what will be.
Good luck.

lets see... if it is suffering like if it has back problems or old age, things like that you should consider it to put it out of its misery. but if it is a sickness and it cost a lot of money you should definitely not put it to sleep. just think of the dog. i wouldnt put a dog to sleep for my life but you should consider with what i said above

I recently had to put my dog down, he was our best friend but was very sick with cancer. If I had it to do over again I think we would have let him go at home. I really regret having the vet do it and my son being there to watch. I think our dog should have went in his sleep, and in his own home. why is yours getting put down?

What kind of question is this? Is there something wrong with it? Did the vet recommend it? If it's simply just to get rid of it, then NO.....take it to the shelter and let some loving family adopt it...or advertise in the newspaper.

That depends on your reason. If the dog is capable of having a longer and happy life, then I suggest finding it a good home.

We're going to need a little more information to answer this.

Why are you considering putting your dog to sleep?

Is it just because they're bored, are they devil worshippers who need your dog for a sacrifice, do they not like you or the dog? You'll have to explain yourself better if you want an answer.
