99 Passat - nice interior, good ride, good safety records, well equipped, but...
very poor reliability, parts are quite expensive, multiple problems with practically everything - engine, electrical, front suspension, brakes, etc.
If you realy like passat - go for 2001 and newer with V6 or W8 engine under VW certified program (it's like extended warranty)

I had a 99 Passat and traded it for an 03 Passat...both wagons. My 03 has been much better to me than the 99. The 99 always had little weird glitches like the gas cap never went on tight enough so driving I would get a warning light about something and a little research later (thankfully not a trip to the dealer) it was reading error because air was getting into through the gas tank.
I think the first answerer to your ques hit the nail on the head. Get a newer one...the cost is not that much diff and the car seems to be a little better to me personally as an owner of two now. I have the V6 engine w/the 4-motion and it handles great. My 99 had a turbo engine but it seemed to always have trouble.
You will love driving the car so go for VW just rethink the year.

i am going to discuss the passat. I actual have only owned vw's and at the moment have a 2004 2.0 golf, a 2000 vr6 Jetta, and a 1967 Beetle. If the passat is the vr6 engine then 84k miles is giant. it is the 12v vr6 and is a ultimate bullet info engine. I actual have 95k on mine and it remains going solid. VW's are a motor vehicle you should love because they do take better to personal than maximum autos yet they're interesting tocontinual and they very last continually. i'm biased yet may take the Passat over any of those, on condition that it have the VR6 engine.

I've had 3 5-speed Golfs: '87, 95, '00
All got between 28-30 MPG
All have exceeded 150,000 miles with minimal repairs
I drive at least 30,000 miles a year, and I drive hard and fast -- these cars feel like an extension of my body; and when I ask them to do something, it gets done.
I'd have gotten a Passat if I could have afforded it...

The 1999 Passat is a good car.I own one,and I also sell VW.Mine has 120,000 miles and have never had any problems. The car was designed to safley travel at over 100 miles per hour.Find a Honda or any other Asian car that can claim that.Yes,repairs can be costly, but with proper maintnance you will have zero problems.Contact me if I can give you more info.,or help you find a good used Passat.vwjcook@yahoo.com

Passat, nice car, great performance, nice ride, tight handling.
Really expensive to repair. Poor quality and reliability.
I would look at a different car.
Look at another Accord. You just can't beat that car.

The Passat that followed it was and is a MUCH better car overall.
I would probably stay away from that year.
