Im an adult with braces. Im wondering how many people have experienced relapse / movement after they got their braces off. Is it very common? Im also wondering how often after having braces do you have to wear a retainer. Is it daily........and is it a pretty definite way to prevent relapse? Thanks

yes. the retainer is the only thing preventing relapse. wear it as much as your orthodonist tell you, or more if it pleases you.

Our teeth move all the time so it is very common to have relapse, the best thing to do is to wear your retainers faithfully, because if you don't you will have some relapse. Most orthodontist recommend that you do wear your retainers daily, usually 24 -7 the first year then only at night after that.

Both myself and my mom had braces at the same time-strange, but true. Anyway, my teeth would shift very quickly (like overnight) after I got mine off if I didn't wear my retainer all the time. However, I was 16 at the time, and my jaw was still growing. My mom got hers off and her teeth would shift-but only a little bit, and only if she didn't wear her retainer for like a week. So basically, if you're over 21 (when your jaw is done growing) your teeth will shift less. However, its still a good idea to wear your retainer fairly often at first. Your teeth will be used to all the pressure caused by braces and they'll shift easier right away. Also, your retainer will be molded to fit your teeth at the time your braces are removed, and if you don't wear it fairly often right off the bat, your teeth will shift and it won't fit and you'll have to go back to the dentist to have it refitted (which is a hassle, let me tell you). So essentially, yes you should wear your retainer as much as you possibly can (of course take it out for eating) from the time you get your braces off until at least a month afterward-then wear it at night only for another month or two and then be done with it-its a pain, and yes your teeth will shift a little even if you do wear it all the time, but its normal, and you shouldn't notice a big difference. Also, stock up on Efferdescent Plus or some other kind of denture soak. This is to soak your retainer in-then gently brush it with a toothbrush and rinse it off. It is essential you do this, or your retainer will smell like a sewer-trust me! Best of luck to you and your new smile!

I had braces as a 30 year old adult. I'm 58 now, and although not perfect, my teeth are still pretty straight.
