Gambling by its very nature has negative monetary expectation.
An entire branch of mathematics (probabilities) was commissioned by some Italians to make sure that the House always wins. You will lose money on any game you play.
In some games (like blackjack when played properly) have a very small house advantage -- I think less than 1%.
But anyone who has ever won consistently at any gambling game -- blackjack, roulette, craps, etc... was cheating. Blackjack has card counters, roulette had people using computers to calculate where it would land, given the ball velocity and wheel velocity. Certain craps players would throw dice with a high likelyhood of landing on the numbers they wanted them to.
In the mob days, you had your hands broken by the good fellas. Now, you get your name and face in a book and are never allowed back.

That said, a lot of people have become rich by playing poker, as has been mentioned. While poker is a gambling game, you are playing against opponents and not the house. Therefore, a good player can expect to get a high return of investment from his money.
I've included some wikipedia entries of some famous poker players.

I have an uncle (Actually my wife's uncle) who put his 5 kids through college playing poker in Vegas. He had a part time job and had two banks. One in Nevada, and one in California, for tax purposes or something. I'm sure exactly why. But he made a lot of money playing poker. Some days he would lose $10,000 and come home and it woul be nothing to him.
It is funny, since now 2 of his kids now work for the casinos on the strip.
He has since retired and is still living very well in Vegas.
So, yes, I personally know someone who made a small fortune gambling in casinos.

Look up Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Johnny Chan, and Jennifer Harman.
all poker players. cash game specialists.
Also, the MIT blackjack team, but they sorta counted cards and took the edge off of the casinos. It's all told in the book "Bringing Down the House".
good luck.

Dude no affence but NOBODY has ever become rich by gambling. The person who told you to ask that question must be a complete idiot. You can only get rich by doing the right thing and reaching for the stars.
