I have a new WInchester Model 70, .270 deer rifle, but the barrel is longer than I am used to. Can it be cut, or should I keep it long?

up to 28 inches it will enhance accuracy. any longer than that is not an advantage. yes the barrel can be cut but it must be done by a qualified gunsmith

Keep it long, the longer the barrel the less chance of screwing up when you fire. Like with a handgun the shorter the barrel the more it reacts to your hand movement, even the slightest jerk can cause it to move in a different direction from where you were aiming. Same with rifles. The longer the better because it gives you more room to play with. It won't react as much if your hand suddenly drops while firing or you jerk to the left or right a little. Your aim will still be true to the target for the most part. So just stick with the longer barrel, take it to the firing range to get used to it, and you'll do alright.

I read a Guns and Ammo mag and they took I think a .223 to an old guy w/a lathe and they took the barrel down in 1" increments. 26" to 16". The highest accuracy was a barrel length of 21", 22", 23" somewhere in that nieghborhood. For deer you might wanna shorten it up for mobility purposes. Depending where you are, you should try and get your shots within a couple hundred yards.

If U cut your carrel make sure to crown the end.

I would leave the barrel like it is. I am guessing you got the 26" barrel. The model 70 is one of the best shooting guns out there. But if you must have it shortened, take it to a trusted gunsmith.

Well it really depends on how you want to hunt. If you want to walk and stalk then you need a short barrel rifle that you can move around in the trees and brush. if you are using a sit and hit blind like a lot of people then a huge barrel is no problem they can be a little tuff to drag up in a tree blind but that depends on you.
I wouldn't even try to get the barrel shortened that is like putting shoe trees in a pair of shoes that are 2 sizes too small and expecting them to be comfortable.

The longer the barrel, the more the accuracy is.

I would not cut the barrell off,the grains of shot depends on how far and straight a bullett travels.150 grain soft point bullett is great for deer.

keep it long my friend that way if you miss your shot maybe you can hit the deer with the barrel

Too long slows the bullet and too short loses accuracy so go talk to a GOOD gunsmith
