Med school, UK, most EU or recognised overseas university. In the UK either a 5 year med degree straight from school or 4 years degree after first degree. Then foundation years 1 & 2 for registration. You'll probably want to do another year or two and then the next step you need to apply for a surgical training position. This will give you a training rotation number as a specialist registrar. You will also need to pass the Memebership of the Royal College of Surgeons exams - you then lose the dr title & become a Miss or Mr again (historical reasons - this only happens in the UK!).
You specialist training will be five years long, maybe more. After this has finishes, you will be eligible to take up a consultant post. Assuming you started straight from school, you will now be 32. And that's if you have not chosen to do any research work...
Also, there are lots of different kinds of surgeons - general, vascular, urology, gynaecology, neurology, lots more.

Basically, the medical training system in the UK has just been overhauled under a system called Modernising Medical Careers so it's all still in a state of flux.

Essentially after qualification you apply for a 2 year foundation scheme. This consists of 4 month placements in a number of areas but if you want to be a surgeon you need to choose a scheme in which surgical rotations are prominent.

Following that there is a further 2-3 years during which you are expected to obtain the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. Once the exam has been passed you progress to surgical registrar training that is 5-6 years (it depends on the subspecialty of surgery you choose).
