after my trip to new york, i started having some eye problems. my eyes constantly feel irritated and when i rub them it becomes bloodshot. they are red most of the time and sometimes watery. i tried washing them with water repeatedly and also used eye drops. nothing helps. i think it may be because of the pollution and dust in newyork that i am unaccustomed to. any ideas on what to do? i cant go see a doctor over the weekend and i need some other ideas that may help. thanks!

Since these symptoms are persistent consider allergies that were triggered in New York and now you are experiencing the reaction where you live. The doctor should screen for possible foreign bodies that may be lingering in your eyes. Get better soon.

Contrary to popular belief, visine is not a good choice. Visine causes vasoconstriction which makes the eye appear less red but is mainly masking the problem. The preservative in visine are well known among eye care professions to cause "rebound redness" after repeated uses.
Allergic reactions are almost always associated with itching. If this is the case try purchasing an OTC allergy medication such as claritin. If no itching is present then your symptoms are more consistant with either a foreign body (unlikely if both eyes) or dry eye. The eye being dry and watery (sounds contradictory) is due to lack of the mucin layer which prevents evaporation of the aqueous layer of your tear film. Systane is an OTC eye drop that can be very helpful to dry eye sufferers. A method that I like particularly is called "flushing" where you drown the eye in the drop. It seems to provide longer relief than just placing a few drops in.

if you are still there in NY try staying inside as much as possible, use a cold pack on your eyes and take some allergy pills, any pharmacist can help you, wear shades outside to keep the sun from making the problem from getting worse.

If you aren't sensitive to it, try Benedryl. It works wonders for my itchy eyes.

Just be careful... it makes some people tired. I only take 1/2 the recommended dose and it is normally just the right amount for me so I don't get sleepy.
