The human body starts to decompose as soon as death occurs. The temperature of the body actually rises at death, which sets decomposition into motion. One hour after death, bacteria from the intestines are released.

As for rigor mortis (stiffening of the musculature), it depends on the temperature of where the body is, humidity factors, outside, inside. Rigor is when the body goes from an alkyline state to an acid state, the back to alkyline. It takes the same amount of time for rigor to be released as it does to come on.

Also, it depends on whether the body has been embalmed or not, and whether the embalming was successful or done poorly. Was it a weak fluid mix or a strong mix. Hypodermic injections or not.

Hope this answers your question.

I hear its a few hours after death that rigor mortis sets in. So I would think it would be 24 hours before it really starts breaking down

depends on the temperature of the room and air flow - hotter temps will decompose faster - a matter of weeks

Depends on the location of the body. Inside, outside, weather, climate, altitude, and alot of different things.

I hope you are just sickly curious and not planning on how long you have to hide a dead body!

I don't know either. It depends on the conditions where the body is.
