I think it all depends on the semantics of being an "opportunist". If being called a shark is under the context of being cunning and aggressive, then it's a good thing; if it's under the context of being sneaky and conniving, than it's a bad thing. Both sides of the equation boil down to the same thing, but it's all a question of whether it's said with a smile or a scowl.

It is negative, except if you need a shark on your side. Many lawyers are referred to as sharks. They just go for the kill, no scruples.
