Yes it's normal for them to want each others food but dogs will become overweight on cat food and cats will go blind eating dogfood. Some type of vitamin cats need for there eyes is missing from dogfood.

As long as you don't mind your cat barking and your dog meowing.
But seriously, pets will share food. Many times they're eating a combination of both foods, so it really doesn't hurt them.

Yes, i think so. It's not really "bad" as long as they are getting their nutrients. My dog ate cat food a couple of times.

The food is designed for the specific animal, e.g. the cat food will be fattening for the dog.
I would recommend your friend to start feeding them seperated from eachother

Our vet gives the dog cat food when he gets his shots to keep his mind off of the needle : ( So it must be ok!
