If you aren't picky about color, try your local home/hardware store. Sometimes they have colors that weren't matched perfectly. I've been able to pick up a gallon of paint there for $5 or less. You can also try your neighborhood hazardous materials recycling center. Ours gives paint away for free.

Check out your local Home Depot or Lowe's. Go to the paint department and ask about "Oops" paint -- that's what HD calls it. It's paint that they mixed the wrong color but is perfectly fine. You can get a gallon for $5.
If you need more than one gallon to cover your area, you may need to get creative.
For my DD's room, I bought two cream colored paints and this really bright red. Then I mixed them in a large bucket and got this really cool shade of pink. Wooo hoo -- an entire room painted for $15!! Just make sure the paints you are mixing are the same base -- ask the person at the paint counter if you are unsure.

If you have a Solid Waste District Office near you (look under local government in the yellow pages) they sometimes have free paint. Instead of throwing paint away and harming the environment, people drop off unused paint at the SWD office. Anyone can come in and get paint for free to use for projects.
You probably won't get lots of one color of paint, but you could combine colors to create new colors, or could be creative in how you paint so that you can use different colors.

I find the best paint bargains at the hardware store. If you are flexible about color you can ask for thier "boo-boo" paints. Colors that were mixed wrong or the customer didn't approve . I got a 1 gallon can of Behr paint for my kitchen at my local hardware store and paid $3.00 for it. Good luck.

most paint store have paint that they have mixed and the customer didn't like it or it wasn't right. you can usually get it for about $5 gallon. they will have swatches with a sample of the paint so you will know what you are getting.
